About the opportunity

The Dental Prosthetics Educator is responsible for the management, planning, coordination, facilitation and/or teaching of dental prosthetics and related activities to students in the Sydney Dental School. The role manages and supervises the technical operations of the laboratory facilities and provides specialist, expert advice, guidance, and technical support to staff, students and clinicians using the teaching spaces.

In addition, the role ensures that the laboratory and teaching spaces are properly maintained, that all equipment and instrumentation is functioning correctly and that preventative work/maintenance protocols are in place. It manages the functionality and development of the teaching space and ensures that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards of the work area are met and are aligned to the University’s WHS policy.

The role is responsible for the safety and smooth operation of the laboratory and the authority to suspend any user, in breach of safety regulations or safe operating procedures.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Provides education administrative and teaching support for clinical sessions to the work area’s academic and teaching staff. Coordinates and/or teaches preclinical and clinical laboratory sessions across all years of the Doctor in Dental Medicine (DMD). This may include didactic theoretical lectures, practical clinical demonstrations, supervision and/or practice for students in a laboratory setting Sets up, prepares, and maintains all equipment in the work area; develops and maintains competence in the operation of equipment and resources used in the day-to-day teaching of dental prosthetics maintains an inventory of all equipment Facilitates delivery of assessments; supports delivery of formative and summative pre-clinical and clinical assessments and examinations. Liaises with and establishes effective working relationships with key staff to ensure that the work area’s education support, learning and teaching priorities and needs are effectively met. Produces educational resources for the Doctor of Dental Medicine in conjunction with teaching staff and the Education Support team. Problem solves and troubleshoots on clinical patient laboratory work for DMD dental students including monitoring the quality of student work being sent to the laboratories as well as products returning from the laboratories. Implements curriculum requirements using detailed knowledge of academic and administrative policies and understanding of the interrelationship between policies and activities in liaison with teaching and clinical staff. Provides hands-on application of technical skills to help students prepare prosthodontic materials. Consults and advises Hospital Technical and Administration staff as required, regarding students’ technical work for patients
  • Ensures relevance and currency of dental prosthetic skills taught within the Doctor of Medicine Program. Designs, develops, implements, and evaluates modules to meet the needs of the students, fulfil the requirements of the DMD and maximise learning opportunities. Facilitates and implements program evaluation and improvements for programs of study by managing the program/subject evaluation process and adopting the changes designed by Academic staff responsible for the program of study or subject. Works with relevant individuals and committees to review and update skills and techniques to ensure they are consistent with best practice. Is involved in curriculum design, development and evaluation of prosthetics scenarios and courses. Liaises with clinical, hospital, University, and external organisations regarding additional training opportunities. Collaborates with educators from other health disciplines to deliver multi-disciplinary skills training, as required. Assists with the implementation of University-wide or Faculty/Discipline-specific operational projects and initiatives in the work area, ensuring effective adoption and application by Academics and teaching staff. Consult and assist other departments in the manufacture and development of technical procedures
  • Provides effective leadership and support to the staff in the clinical laboratory. Utilises and demonstrates a range of dental equipment required for different stages of laboratory procedures to students and staff Provides expert advice, technical support and assistance to students, clinicians, researchers, and other technical staff working in the laboratory Develops solutions to investigate complex problems, performs analytical tests or investigative tasks, and analyses qualitative and quantitative tests by recording and computing relevant data. Demonstrates diplomacy when collaborating closely with internal and external services provided. Trains staff, students, and visitors (where appropriate) in the safe operation of laboratory equipment. Provides effective leadership and support to staff using the clinical laboratory and supports the Manager, Clinical Skills and Simulation (Camperdown) in building an effective and high performing team. Ensures effective collaboration takes place between staff in the clinical laboratory and other groups across the Faculty and the University. Maintains a positive and productive clinical laboratory environment to support effective and efficient delivery of services aligned to stakeholder needs
  • Manages the laboratory workplace ensuring that the learning and teaching requirements of the work area are met effectively. Oversees and maintains the Hospital and University Workplace Health and Safety records, as per the University’s Workplace Health and Safety policy, ensuring that WHS matters requiring attention are addressed appropriately. Implements the University and Hospital’s WHS Policy, by pro-actively engaging laboratory staff to develop a safe workplace environment for staff and students using the Laboratory, including an awareness of WHS requirements Ensures laboratory standards and quality control providing a monitoring resource for the hospital in-house laboratory as well as commercial laboratories. Oversees and manages the laboratory stores and purchase of laboratory equipment and consumables, in line with budgetary constraints, ensuring that an adequate supply of consumables is available, and the daily needs of the laboratory are met. Monitors technical/surgical equipment, reporting issues or faults as required, ensuring that repairs and/or preventative maintenance is undertaken appropriately in a timely manner. Coordinates and supervises laboratory access for courses conducted by other department, external or internal courses
  • Oversees the preparation of reporting and documentation for the work area. Develops and implements laboratory procedures and ensures that procedures are duly documented and made available to staff in the laboratory. Ensures that adequate and appropriate records are maintained ensuring that results are captured in appropriate formats, accurate records of analytical results are maintained, analyses are conducted in accordance with required specifications, and identifies and reports errors arising. Develops and maintains best practice data management (including archiving) in accordance with the developing University policy and provides input into that policy development and implementation. Provides information and data to meet reporting requirements and/or prepare required reports. Ensures the work area complies with School and Faculty’s requirements including the Faculty’s management procedures, annual reporting, and regular reviews etc. Is aware of statutory regulations that affect clinical care, service, and support management with the implementation of these regulations. Adheres to relevant LHD or healthcare partner facility policies, codes, guidelines, and values
  • Contributes to the FMH Procedural/Clinical Skills Community of Practice Attends and actively participates in FMH community of practice meetings and keeps up to date with new procedures and protocols. Collaborates with and actively supports Clinical Skills and Simulation staff across the Precinct(s). Contributes to the development of the education support unit through continuous improvement and adoption of new initiatives. Conducts or participates in workshops, symposia, committees, and conferences to promote and share advances in health education, health curricula and business development
  • Undertakes ad-hoc projects and other activities. Performs work activities relevant to the role’s key accountabilities as approved by the Manager and commensurate to the role’s classification level.

About you

  • Postgraduate qualifications in relevant field or experience
  • APHRA registered as a Dental Prosthetist in NSW
  • Relevant qualifications in appropriate discipline with subsequent relevant experience in related field, sound technical knowledge of scientific and safety procedures and/or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
  • Experience in aspects of teaching, supervising and assessing students
  • Experience in prosthodontic technical work including fixed and removable prosthodontics.
