About the Opportunity

The Technical Officer supports the daily operations of the School’s workshop at the Gold Coast campus, working under the guidance of the Senior Technical Officer. The role manages stock control, equipment upkeep, and student inductions to ensure the safe use of tools and machinery.

Supporting undergraduate Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design students, the position provides technical advice and hands on assistance across hand tools, benchtop power tools, laser cutters and 3D printing. The Technical Officer also offers fabrication support to students and academic staff, ensuring all activities align with safety standards.

The role actively manages health and safety across workshop, laboratory and studio spaces, including chemical management, PPE requirements, maintenance systems, and space audits. It also contributes to engagement, marketing and recruitment activities within these environments on the Gold Coast campus.

Key Responsibilities

Provide technical support, advice and fabrication assistance to academic staff and to undergraduate and postgraduate students across the School of Engineering and Built Environment.

Support laboratory based teaching by setting up and packing down equipment, supervising workshop activities, and maintaining a clean and safe environment. Operate a range of workshop tools including laser cutters, 3D printers, lathes, mills, table saws and CNC routers.

Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and deliver safety inductions to ensure compliance with all WHS requirements.

Conduct regular safety audits, proactively assist in laboratory safety compliance, manage chemical inventories, and oversee safe handling and disposal of chemicals.

Assist with engagement, marketing and recruitment activities within EBE laboratory and studio spaces at the Gold Coast campus.

Oversee the day to day operation of the Student Workshop and assigned labs, including equipment bookings, stock control, and resource management. Manage preventative maintenance, calibration and repair schedules to ensure equipment is available and operational.

About you

Engineering based trade qualification with minimum 3 years post trade experience, or equivalent combination of relevant experience and skills.

Proven ability to safely operate metal and woodworking equipment and hand tools, performing technical fabrication work to a professional standard.

Strong understanding of mechanical engineering concepts and ability to work effectively under pressure with minimal supervision.

Competent in using design software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD , email and Microsoft Office, and a sound knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety legislation and policies.

Experience working in a teaching environment, Open Unrestricted Driver’s License and a Forklift High-Risk license is desirable.

Candidates must have full unrestricted Australian work rights and may be subject to a National criminal history check.

This is a continuing opportunity based at the Gold Coast campus. As Griffith is a multi-site University you may be required to work across other locations.

HEW 5 Salary – Base range $79,705.66 - $89,416.39 + 17% super. Full package range $93,255.63 - $104,617.18.
