Director-Artificial Intelligence in Education
About Us: The Sonoma County Office of Education serves the students of Sonoma County by providing training and consultation to the county’s 40 districts. Sonoma County is located about an hour north of San Francisco. The region is known for its award winning wines, and restaurants, coastland, Redwoods, and outdoor recreation.
Definition: Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent, the Director of Artificial Intelligence in Education will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of AI-driven solutions to support teaching, learning, and operational efficiency within Sonoma County schools. This role includes coordinating with school districts, educators, and technology partners to ensure equitable and ethical use of AI technologies aligned with the county’s goals for innovation, equity, and student achievement.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This position is responsible for establishing strategic vision, program design, policy development, and collaborative partnerships related to the integration of AI into educational settings. The Director serves as a subject matter expert on AI in education and provides consultation, leadership, and training to districts across the county.
Supervision Exercised and Received: General direction is provided by the Assistant Superintendent of School Culture and Partnerships.
Example of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and implementation of AI strategies to support personalized learning, data-informed instruction, and administrative efficiency.
- Support districts in understanding and responsibly adopting AI tools aligned with legal, ethical, and educational standards.
- Develop and deliver professional development and technical assistance to school leaders, educators, and staff regarding AI applications in education.
- Collaborate with state and national organizations to monitor policy trends, share best practices, and influence AI-related legislation or guidance.
- Build and maintain partnerships with technology providers, higher education, research institutions, and community organizations.
- Support the evaluation and adoption of AI tools that promote equity, improve outcomes, and align with district goals.
- Monitor AI system impacts on student privacy, algorithmic bias, and data governance, and support mitigation plans where needed.
- Contribute to grant writing and development of funding proposals that expand AI implementation across the region.
- Provide technical expertise on AI-related contracts, data use agreements, and procurement processes.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education: PhD is preferred. Experience: Minimum of three years of experience in classroom instruction. Experience with AI implementation or educational technology integration. Experience coaching teachers and designing and delivering professional learning is preferred. Credentials: Appropriate valid California Teaching Credential and California Administrative Services Credential are required. Physical Requirements: Occasional travel within Sonoma County and outside the region. Must be able to work at a computer and participate in meetings, including via video conferencing.
