Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Dean will possess the vision and leadership skills necessary to advance the library and its core mission, play a key role in integrating the library into campus-wide initiatives, such as student success and institutional strategic planning, and lead the development of creative and innovative library services and programming. Experience in library management, including strategic planning and assessment, is essential. The Dean will also have experience with the latest developments in pedagogy, as well as innovative library technologies and initiatives. The Dean will work collaboratively with the academic deans and other members of the Provost's Council to develop and implement policies and programs that support the university's academic mission, including in the key areas of information literacy and research support. In addition to participating in and contributing to long-range and strategic planning activities for the Division of Academic Affairs, the Dean will work to establish partnerships with stakeholders across the University, the community, and the state in advancing the mission and the strategic plan of the University and the library. The Dean of the Library reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work in consultation with the professional librarians and staff to define, articulate and execute the vision, strategic directions, and priorities of the library, while supporting and contributing to the university's mission and strategic plan.
  • Direct program development for the library, including the development of annual goals and objectives aligned to the library's strategic plan and mission, the university's Strategic Plan and the Academic Plan.
  • Provide administrative and academic stewardship for library facilities, collections, resources, and services.
  • Develop and administer operating, acquisition, grant and equipment budgets.
  • Oversee the development, coordination, planning, and access for print and digital collections.
  • Oversee recruitment and supervise library personnel under the various collective bargaining agreements.
  • Support and develop library personnel through strategic professional development opportunities, recognition of accomplishments, and active mentoring.
  • Develop and maintain a dynamic work environment that promotes diversity and inclusion and values creativity, teamwork, innovation and transparency.
  • Provide strategic and visionary leadership to advance the library's commitment to equal opportunity in services, collections, and spaces.
  • Work with schools and academic departments to foster the use of library services within all educational programs and achieve mutual goals.
  • Establish collaborative relationships across campus and with other institutions to ensure the library is meeting the needs of all constituents.
  • Serve as primary liaison while building relationships for the library with community members, staff, faculty and students, and including but not limited to professional associations such as MCCLPHEI and state government agencies.
  • Formulate and implement Library policies per the MSCA agreement.
  • Prepare various reports for the University and outside agencies as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution (MLS or MLIS required).
  • Significant experience in all areas of academic library administration (including fiscal management, budget management and administration, project management, personnel management, and strategic planning) with a minimum of five years of progressive responsibility.
  • Strong understanding of digital technologies, scholarly communication, open access initiatives and emerging trends in library and information science.
  • Experience with using data and analytics to assess library services and collections, and communicate the library's value.
  • Experience with recruiting, hiring, managing, mentoring, and developing library personnel.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, leadership, and collaboration skills, both within and outside the library, including with academic departments and community partners.
  • Personal qualities include: integrity, good judgment, creativity, open mindedness and the commitment to working in a collaborative and diverse environment.
  • Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations and students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Ability to work in a strongly collaborative environment across multiple academic and administrative areas, with an emphasis on supporting teaching, learning, and scholarship through the use of library resources and services.
  • Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted through the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI), a SORI and a background check satisfactory.
  • Ability to perform above duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Additional Master's degree or doctorate.
  • Experience in fundraising and/or grant writing for library or non-profit organizations.
  • Experience in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Experience with public service programs and library-led community outreach efforts.
  • Engagement with current library scholarship and research.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, professional non-union position. Salary is $140,000 to $145,000 commensurate with education and experience. Applications Deadline: October 10, 2025.
