The Position:

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is committed to the academic success of its students by cultivating a rich and rewarding learning environment that enables them to meet their academic goals and provides students with the competencies to succeed in their professional careers. The Vice Provost, Student Affairs partners with campus leaders to ensure that OHSU delivers innovative and effective programs that support students in navigating an enriching and stimulating learning environment at all OHSU campuses, enabling students to reach their full potential.

In collaboration with academic leadership at the program, school and institutional level, the Vice Provost, Student Affairs is responsible for developing a strategic vision for student affairs at OHSU, leading its implementation, and overseeing ongoing operations. The Vice Provost, Student Affairs directly supervises the Academic Success Center, Center for Learner Diversity & Inclusion (CLDI), Confidential Advocacy Program, Office of Science Education Opportunities, Office for Student Access, Office of Student Life, Student CARE Program, and Student Health & Wellness. The Vice Provost, Student Affairs is responsible for ongoing assessment of the student support services to ensure that they are meeting learner needs.

The Vice Provost, Student Affairs is also responsible for collaborating with all University departments to promote the advancement of student support, engagement, and communication functions to create purposeful interactions with faculty, staff, and administration, as well as with pre-matriculation partners in support of the University’s mission statement, core values, and vision to nurture student success.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and collaborate with school, college, and program leadership, faculty, staff, and students in all areas of student life including daily operations, educational programming, crisis management, and conflict resolution.
  • Provide strategic vision, leadership, resource and budget management, comprehensive strategic planning, and overall supervision, administration and advocacy for co-curricular student experiences in alignment with institutional goals and objectives.
  • Anticipate the evolution of student needs and develop proactive and evidence-based policies, procedures, and handbooks related to student services and student success, including ADA guidelines, Title IX compliance, pre-matriculation pathways, and internship programming.
  • Oversee development and submission of internal and external reports, assessment and evaluation of student services units and initiate improvements to ensure that student services are effective, innovative, proactive, anticipatory and responsive to student and community requirements and in compliance with federal, regional, and state regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Oversee, in partnership with digital strategies and the student communications workgroup, the writing, editing, and distribution of student focused content including but not limited to websites (i.e. Student Central), newsletters (i.e. Student News), and communicating responses to current events and/or crises.
  • Collaborate with Admissions, Student Health, Student Access, Student Life, college student affairs deans, financial debt management, Student Academic Support Services, etc. to align and expand, as needed, student services impact.
  • Strengthen OHSU’s role as a statewide leader in student pathway development, workforce readiness, and equitable access to higher education. Ensure that pathway and outreach programs are strategically aligned with institutional goals.
  • Assume all other reasonable duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Vice Provost and/or Provost.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Student Development, Higher Education, Educational Leadership or related field with at least seven (7) years of progressive leadership experience in Student Affairs or 15 years of related work experience may be substituted in lieu of educational qualifications.
  • Proven desire and ability to be a champion and chief advocate for student well-being and interests.
  • Comprehensive knowledge, understanding, and experience implementing state and federal laws including, but not limited to: Title IX, Americans with Disabilities Act, FERPA, Clery Act, Campus SaVE.
  • Proven ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Experience in organizing and writing strategic communications (i.e., newsletters, blogs, websites, crisis management), reports, and presentations.
  • Advanced project management skills. Strong organizational skills to manage and oversee the performance and functions of the student support units, ensuring critical tasks are performed accurately, in a timely manner, with a high degree of quality service.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complex and decentralized organizations and university governance through active participation and applied practice. Experienced leader in the planning, executing and reporting of accreditation and assessment processes to improve student outcomes.
  • Professional expertise in change management and organizational culture transformation.
  • Exceptional listening and communication skills with demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external constituencies.
  • Proven commitment to advancing educator development by actively supporting faculty and staff through training, mentorship, or professional learning initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of advising and mediation techniques to effectively support OHSU professional counseling faculty. Proven ability to assess and negotiate individual and group conflicts using skills that include, but are not limited to, listening, reflecting, and summarizing.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience with diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging efforts in higher education. This includes a commitment to self-awareness, self-management, and continual growth and learning; demonstrated sensitivity to and ability to develop an inclusive environment.

The Office of Student Affairs provides support, referrals, and one-on-one guidance to OHSU students across all programs and schools. The Office’s goal is to ensure the learning environment is safe, supportive, enriching and stimulating. Academic and Career Support

  • The Academic Success Center offers tutoring, writing support, and academic coaching.
  • The Office for Student Access (OSA) supports students at OHSU by supporting access to its programs and services by approving accommodations for disability, Title IX pregnancy and parenting, and religion. Accomodations can be provided in areas like classrooms, clinical rotations, research and lab spaces, University activites, and more.

Housing, Basic Needs and Personal Support

  • The Consultation, Awareness, Resources and Education (CARE) Program helps support students through various personal challenges.
  • While OHSU does not offer on-campus housing, support and partnerships are available to connect students to a variety of affordable places to live near campus.
  • A campus food resource center, basic needs advisor, and emergency funding are available to students experiencing short-term financial hardship.
  • The Confidential Advocacy Program (CAP) provides confidential support services to OHSU students who have experienced any form of sexual misconduct. They also support OHSU students around experiences of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation related to their OHSU education or employment.

Health and Wellness Support

  • OHSU has an exceptional health and wellness program that encompasses medical and behavioral healthcare. Primary care, mental health support, immunization compliance, suicide prevention programming, and wellness support are all offered through Student Health Services.

Student Leadership, Engagement, and Involvement Support

  • Through its work with student interest groups, the Office of Student Life helps students build meaningful networks with peers who have similar interests. The Office provides wellness amenities and recreational extracurricular opportunities that build community and support students' development into well-balanced healthcare and research professionals.
  • The All-Hill Student Council serves as a cornerstone of campus life, fostering leadership development, student engagement, and meaningful involvement opportunities. Through its initiatives and programs, the Council empowers students to lead, connect, and contribute to the campus community.
  • The Center for Learner Diversity and Inclusion (CLDI) is committed to building an environment where students from historically underrepresented populations can thrive and maximize their potential. Services such as academic advising, internship opportunities, support for students who experience a disability, and multiple student interest organizations are all housed in the CLDI to create a safe space for students from marginalized communities, and foster collaborations that will advance justice in health care and education.

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is a thriving institution comprised of five schools including School of Nursing, School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, OHSU/PSU School of Public Health, and the OHSU/OSU College of Pharmacy. OHSU offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees and/or certificates in over 55 accredited education programs, several of them joint with other institutions. Of the approximately 3,000 students enrolled at OHSU in Fall 2024, approximately 50% were graduate and professional students.
