Position Summary:

The Division of Student Affairs (DSA) at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) is a forward-thinking, student success-oriented team of professionals committed to its role in strategically engineering and implementing the co-curricular out-of-class student experience. Staff members within the Division of Student Affairs are expected to positively contribute to our mission of supporting students in the co-curricular environment and provide an experience that inspires students academically, intellectually, personally, and emotionally.

The Director of Asian Pacific American Student Services (APASS) and Native American Student Services (NASS) serves as a campus leader providing academic, cultural, educational, and social programs and activities that support student success for self-identifying Asian, Pacific Islander, and/or Native American students and any UNC student wishing to engage in the services of APASS and NASS. The Director works collaboratively with University partners to provide consulting, programming, and other activities to enhance a campus climate of equity, and inclusion.

The Director serves as a member of the Division of Student Affairs to:

  • Provide support and direction to faculty and staff to enhance the educational experience of UNC's Asian, Pacific Islander, and/or Native American students populations through current student development, racial identity development, and intersectionality theories, student affairs values, and current trend data.
  • Ensure collaborative partnerships, effective programming efforts, and comprehensive, campus-wide support services are available to Asian, Pacific Islander, and/or Native American students, by developing and maintaining meaningful partnerships and collaborations with UNC departments, clubs and organizations, and other campus constituents to ensure equitable and inclusive practice.
  • Provide academic, emotional, wellness, and social support services to enhance university-wide efforts to recruit, retain, and graduate undergraduate and graduate students who identify as Asian, Pacific Islander, and/or Native American.
  • Assess and evaluate student interests, University processes and direction, and the current societal environment to select events, performers, and academic-based programs which enhance the academic environment and align with the academic plan, mission and values of UNC.
  • Hire, train, advise, and evaluate APASS and NASS undergraduate and graduate staff in effective organizational management, planning, and program coordination.
  • Serve as the budget director for APASS and NASS in order to create and maintain sustainable and accurate fiscal processes.
  • Serve as a representative and advocate on University leadership and decision-making committees to ensure University policies, procedures, and practices support all students.

Job Duties:

Leadership and Vision (40%)

  • Provide vision and direction for APASS and NASS to operate as two separate and independent university-sponsored Cultural Centers.
  • Develop short-and long-term strategic plans that guide APASS and NASS operations and contribute to the long term stability of the two separate Centers.
  • Develop and align these two separate plans with UNC's strategic plan, mission, and values.
  • Ensure that collaborative partnerships, effective programming efforts, and comprehensive, campus wide support are available for Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native American students.

University and Community Relations (30%)

  • Collaborate with internal and external constituents (including faculty, other cultural center directors, alumni, professional staff from other units, etc.) to provide academic enrichment and personal development opportunities for all UNC students.
  • Advocate for the needs of Asian, Pacific Islander, and/or Native American students in the development of university policies, programs, and services on campus committees.
  • Provide consultation and support services for UNC's administration, faculty and staff to ensure the inclusion and equity based needs of Asian, Pacific Islander, and/or Native American student services are available.
  • Attend, and when appropriate, give presentations at local, regional, and national meetings, conferences, and symposia on topics related to higher education and student development, including those with a specific focus on Asian, Pacific Islander, and/or Native American students.

Student Services (25%)

  • Design and deliver programs and services that develop and address the student success needs of students, with a particular focus on Asian, Pacific Islander, and/ or Native American students.
  • Promote student development through mentorship and leadership opportunities offered through APASS and NASS programs, including student clubs and organizations, internships, job opportunities, and graduate school.
  • Maintain a regular calendar of signature events that promote student development and education about Asian, Pacific Islander, and/or Native American culture and identity.
  • Design and develop evaluation and assessment methods to ensure that programs and services are meeting expectations, and outlined learning outcomes are achieved.
  • Tailor academic support and coaching with culturally responsive educational retention methods through individual meetings and collective programming.
  • Consult and collaborate with campus partners to create streamline pathways of academic success for students from underrepresented backgrounds.

General Administrative (5%)

  • Hire, direct, support, evaluate, and supervise graduate and undergraduate student staff.
  • Oversee and manage the APASS and NASS budgets, accounts, facility, and equipment.
  • Develop, maintain, and distribute print and electronic communication materials (i.e., program brochures, website, social media, etc.) that provide information and education to internal and external audiences about APASS, NASS and their services.
  • Prepare annual reports documenting progress towards long and short-term strategic goals for APASS and NASS.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Minimum requirement includes masters degree in Student Affairs/Higher Education, Counseling, Psychology, Public Administration/Policy or other related field. Equivalent experience in lieu of educational requirement would be dependent upon quality and responsibilities of experience.

Experience:

A minimum of three- years' experience in progressively responsible administrative positions in student affairs or comparable areas.

  • 3 years of professional experience in developing, administering, and implementing student development programs and services.
  • 3 years managing and administering a budget.
  • 1 year supervising student employees.
  • A strong understanding of current issues in the profession is highly desirable.
  • A terminal degree is highly desirable.

Certification/Registration/Licensing:

NONE.

Ability:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and work experience with students who identify within the Asian, Pacific Islander, and or Native American diasporas and/or general knowledge about the experiences of students of color within higher education.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, racial identity development theory, and intersectionality theory.
  • Exhibited enthusiasm, dedication, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated program budgeting and supervisory experience.

Employees at UNC receive sick leave, and other leave options may be available based on position. Full-time employees are eligible to receive tuition waiver benefits, as well as dependents and spouses of UNC Employees who are employed at 0.5 FTE or above are eligible for undergraduate dependent tuition grants of up to 50%. These tuition grants will cover in-state tuition charges. Further requirements may exist. Other benefits may be available based on position.
