Job Description

The Director of Annual Giving is responsible for overall leadership and management of the University’s annual giving and leadership giving ($1,000+/year) fundraising efforts, including the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and prospective donors. This position is the University’s expert in the development and solicitation of annual gifts via mass solicitation techniques including direct mail, e-mail, social media, and telephone; and is responsible for overseeing the marketing of the planned giving program.

The position serves as a key member of the development team and works in close collaboration with the overall Advancement Alumni Engagement team and campus partners.

  1. Design, implement, manage and evaluate the University’s overall annual giving and leadership giving ($1,000+ annual gift) programs. (60%)
    Lead and manage planning and strategy development, tactical solicitation, coordinating prospect lists, the renewal and reminder system, evaluative matrices, and make personal visit to existing and prospective leadership giving members.
    Lead and manage the micro-campaigns/crowd-funding process focused on Huskies Athletics, student organizations, affinity groups, programs colleges, special projects, and other groups related to the University.
    Lead and manage special fundraising drives and initiatives like #Giving Tuesday, SCSU Giving Week, Faculty/Staff giving, and Give the Max Day.
  2. Provide leadership, plan, implement, and carry out development activities for all gift levels (20%)
    Promote leadership giving and identify ways in which to strengthen the program and increase the number of donors and amount raised.
    Employs a relationship-oriented approach to secure new, renewed and upgraded gifts of $1,000+ from a portfolio of individuals, corporations and foundations.
    Manage initiatives, visits, and other activities leading to charitable contributions and work collaboratively with the appropriate personnel in the colleges, schools and departments to carry out these activities.
    Participate as a member of the University-wide leadership team for prospect coordination.
    Manage the marketing and promotion of Planned Giving efforts.
  3. Serve as the liaison to the Deans, Director and Vice Presidents in the respective colleges/areas in the development and execution of annual giving fundraising plans, solicitation and case stating. Collaboratively work with Marketing Specialist on development of printed and electronic materials. (10%)
  4. Participate in special events to cultivate alumni, supporters and friends of the University. (5%)
  5. Other duties as assigned as the direction of the Vice President of Advancement and Alumni Engagement. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus four years of advanced professional experience in fundraising, sales, marketing, communications, or related field, or an equivalent combination of post-secondary training, education and/or advanced professional experience.
  • Working knowledge of the Annual Giving profession including metrics, tactics, strategies and projected outcomes for a healthy annual giving campaign
  • Strong project management skills including high level of accuracy, organization and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated skills in interpersonal relationship with the ability to exercise a high level of diplomacy, tact, sound judgment, discretion and confidentiality
  • Superior written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and build consensus and collaboration, with service-oriented attitude and actions
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and adjust under pressure with minimal direction
  • Competency in constituent management and/or fundraising databases and related tools
  • Competency in Microsoft Office software
  • Demonstrates commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment

Preferred Qualification

  • Master’s degree plus three years of advanced professional experience in a related field.
  • Higher education fundraising experience, especially with annual fund, leadership giving and/or marketing planned giving programs
  • Experience with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge

Working Conditions

Some evening and weekend work required; some overnight travel may be required

Physical Effort

Ability to lift up to 25lbs. Assist with event delivery which may require moving and lifting boxes and other items.
