Position Information

The Director of the University Theatre oversees all aspects of front and back of house operations including personnel, schedules, budgets, technical elements, box office, and logistics for all performances and events in UC Riverside's University Theatre. In their role, the Director exercises leadership and discretionary authority to solve managerial, technical production, and operational concerns and utilizes a high degree of independence, ingenuity, and analytical skills to resolve complex problems that may be without precedent and/or structure. The Director has expertise in multiple theatrical areas including production management, technical theatre, front-of-house and patron management, and arts education. The University Theatre is a 460-seat proscenium theatre that hosts approximately 100 performances, lectures, and events annually from a variety of constituencies including the academic departments of Dance, Music, and Theatre, Film, and Digital Production, on-campus units such as the Office of the Chancellor, and off-campus rentals for Inland Empire performing groups. The Director's scope includes the development and implementation of budgets, oversight of all staff and operational activities, and the safe operation of the University Theatre including adherence to campus safety and fire regulations. Additional duties include researching and developing strategies for equipment and facility upgrades, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and collaborating with other production staff across the University to achieve shared goals. This is a hands-on position that requires the Director to leverage their strong background in theatre production to perform tasks such as training students and part-time staff in lighting, audio, rigging, video, and other technical theatre areas, and participate in the running of shows when necessary. The Director supervises two full-time career staff (stagehand and box office manager), and four part-time stagehands, and oversees the hiring and training of 20-30 students annually. The Director of the University Theatre reports to the Production Director for the Performing Arts and collaborates with other members of the performing arts staff and faculty to recommend and implement strategies in pursuit of common objectives.

Please Note: This is an exempt position requiring in-person work on campus in the evenings and on weekends during production periods. Applicants should be highly collaborative, have a deep commitment to delivering client and customer satisfaction, possess at least five years of production management experience, and have excellent leadership skills.

The full salary range for the Director of University Theatre is $78,700 - $145,100 annual salary. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

As a university employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.
