The Director of Workforce, Career, and Experiential Learning provides visionary leadership for Finger Lakes Community College’s initiatives in workforce development, career and technical education (CTE), and experiential learning, encompassing internships, externships, domestic field studies, and study abroad to ensure students gain meaningful real-world and intercultural experiences. The Director collaborates with faculty, staff, business and industry leaders, government agencies, international organizations, and funding partners to design innovative programs, secure and manage grants, and deliver opportunities that prepare students for high-demand careers, foster global engagement, and advance the region’s economic vitality.

Qualifications:

Educational Background:

  1. Required: Master’s degree in education, workforce development, business administration, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership experience in workforce development, career education, applied learning, or global initiatives within higher education or a related sector. Proven experience in developing workforce training programs in collaboration with industry partners. Strong understanding of career and technical education (CTE), adult education, and economic development. Experience managing budgets, securing grants, and working with external funding sources. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and global engagement. Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  2. Preferred: Experience in a community college setting. Familiarity with workforce funding models, apprenticeship programs, and industry partnerships. Experience leading international education and global initiatives. Knowledge of labor market trends, emerging workforce needs, and industry certifications.
  3. Special Skills: Minimum of three years of progressively increasing supervisory experience. Must be knowledgeable about student retention best-practices, and strategies that promote student engagement and academic success. Experience with grant implementation, reporting and management. Must be able to prepare and analyze statistical reports, budget formulation and preparation and adjust services accordingly. Experience in counseling, curriculum and/or program development, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and effective organizational and management skills.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Strategy

  1. Designs and implements a comprehensive vision for workforce training that aligns with the college’s mission and strategic goals, ensuring adults in the service area have accessible opportunities for career advancement through targeted training and upskilling.
  2. Oversees the development and implementation of workforce and career training programs that respond to labor market needs, emerging industries, and employer demands.
  3. Provides leadership for applied learning initiatives, including internships, apprenticeships, service learning, and experiential education.
  4. Fosters global engagement by developing international partnerships, study abroad programs, and cross-cultural learning opportunities.

Workforce, Career, and Community Education

  1. Collaborates with business and industry leaders to identify workforce development needs and create customized training programs.
  2. Works with the Associate Provost, faculty, and staff to develop non-credit workforce training programs that align with industry-recognized certifications, credentials, and pathways to credit-bearing programs.
  3. Conducts labor market analysis to assess workforce trends, employer demands, and skills gaps in key industries.
  4. Develops advisory councils with industry representatives to ensure workforce training programs align with current and future employer needs.
  5. Engages in regional economic development efforts to support business expansion and job creation initiatives.
  6. Develops strategies to leverage public-private partnerships for workforce training and student success.
  7. Promotes tuition assistance and employer-sponsored education programs to make workforce training accessible to community members.
  8. Supports career training initiatives and secure and manage external funding, including grants and workforce development contracts.
  9. Secures grants to offset institutional and student costs for programs in high-demand fields.
  10. Works with the Adult Education Coordinator, develops and oversees inclusive, accessible, and diverse educational programs that serve the interests and needs of the broader community, including youth, adults, and seniors.
  11. Works with the Adult Education Coordinator, conducts regular needs assessments and collaborates with local organizations, schools, and civic groups to identify service gaps and creates relevant learning opportunities that enrich community life.
  12. Recruits and manages a diverse team of community educators, volunteers, and subject matter experts, providing training and resources to ensure high-quality instruction aligned with adult learning principles.
  13. Develops and implements community outreach strategies to promote programs, build visibility, and increase participation, using traditional and digital marketing tools to reach a broad audience.

Experiential Education and Career Services

  1. Oversees the expansion of experiential learning opportunities, ensuring students gain real-world skills and experiences. These opportunities could include internships, cooperative education, service learning, undergraduate research, field studies, work-based learning, apprenticeships, and project-based learning.
  2. Strengthens partnerships with employers and community organizations to create robust internship, apprenticeship, and work-based learning programs.
  3. Oversees the development of international education programs, including study abroad, exchange programs, and global partnerships.
  4. Oversees the support of faculty and staff in developing globally focused curricula and initiatives, including field studies, externships, study abroad, and other domestic and international opportunities.
  5. Facilitates faculty exchange opportunities with international institutions, encouraging cross-cultural academic collaborations.
  6. Identifies and applies for funding opportunities to expand experiential and global education programs.
  7. Works with internal stakeholders to measure the impact of experiential education initiatives on student success and career readiness.
  8. Promotes diversity, inclusion, and global competencies among students and faculty.
  9. Ensures that all experiential and global education activities align with institutional policies, accreditation requirements, and risk management protocols.
  10. Oversees exchange programs and create reciprocal partnerships with global institutions in consultation with the Associate Provost of Curriculum and Instruction.
  11. Provides leadership for comprehensive career services, including career exploration, resume development, interview preparation, and job placement support to help students transition successfully into the workforce.
  12. Establishes and maintains partnerships with regional employers to create employment opportunities that align with students’ academic programs and career goals.
  13. Monitors career services outcomes and student satisfaction through data collection and assessment tools, using the results to enhance programming, employer engagement, and student support strategies.

Administration and Operations

  1. Supervises and provides professional development for faculty and staff within the workforce, applied learning, career services and global initiatives offices.
  2. Works with the Applied Learning office on aligning workforce and transfer needs with program advisory boards.
  3. Works with the Applied Learning and Career Services Office to organize networking events, career fairs, and employer panels to expose students to potential career opportunities.
  4. Seeks grant opportunities to further develop relevant programming for the FLCC service area.
  5. Manages budgets, resources, and operational processes to ensure program effectiveness and fiscal sustainability internally and with secured grants.
  6. Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to all areas of oversight.
  7. Collects and analyzes data to assess program effectiveness and inform continuous improvement efforts.

Work Environment

  1. This position requires occasional travel for industry engagement, workforce development meetings, and global education partnerships.
  2. Evening and weekend work may be required to support workforce and career training programs.

Benefits and salary range:

Applicants receiving benefits through the New York State Retirement System should review state regulations regarding post-retirement employment. This position is not eligible for employment under a Section 211 waiver.

  1. Competitive starting salary in the range of $72,809 to $76,449 and is commensurate with qualifications
