Director, Office for the Advancement of Military Medicine (Academic Rank DOQ)
Position Summary
The Director of the Office for the Advancement of Military Medicine (OMM) will be a key leader in the Office of the Chancellor, reporting to the Vice Chancellor for External Relations at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. This leadership role is responsible for developing and executing strategies to create, strengthen, and manage collaborations between UNMC and other University of Nebraska system entities, National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI), and military partners to advance the university's civilian-military healthcare engagement portfolio. The primary academic appointment rank will be on the special appointment track at Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI), based upon the candidate's experience. For work performed on behalf of MMI, the selected candidate will report directly to the Dean and Director of MMI.
University Roles and Responsibilities:
- Maintains strategic vision and develops opportunities to optimize training, research, military-civilian resiliency and preparedness efforts, and facilitates collaboration between military and civilian leadership as well as clinical staff to improve services/support
- Facilitates planning, development, and operations of collaborations for the clinical rotations of military medical personnel from multiple units within non-military hospitals in the Omaha metropolitan area
- Represents the OMM at various Board and Executive meetings at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Nebraska Medicine, as well as at military or federal interagency engagements, as appropriate
- Guides programmatic growth/advancement to further readiness, capability development, and capacity, support military communities, furthers military-civilian synergy
- Foster formal agreements (with direct liaison authority in partnership with Nebraska Medicine) with Department of War (DoW) to leverage existing and future clinical capabilities and resources
- Informs leaders and staff of the state of OMM, relevant issues and future mission plans
- Maintains open communications with internal and external partners for medical readiness
- Serves as operational response lead for OMM in emergencies (role specific dependent upon nature of emergency and role of OMM)
- Facilitates research across OMM and works with UNMC and NSRI researchers to support the evidence base for the OMM mission
- Serve as an advisor to the Global Center for Health Security, coordinating DoW activities and engagements
- Host distinguished visitors and DoW senior leaders
- Highlights military and civilian partnerships with UNMC and Nebraska Medicine and emphasizes value of the program towards military readiness
- Interact with strategic communications and external affairs at the hospital, university, and external affairs to collaborate and liaise at the hospital, university, DoW Service, Joint Staff, Defense Health Agencey (DHA), and associated Military Health System organizations
- Operational oversight for Infectious Disease Air Transport facility and select OMM managed DoW associated facilities
- Serves as co-principal investigator for the National Institute for Defense Health Cooperation ecosystem partnership
- DoW IRB advisor and liaison to collaborate with NSRI and UNMC Human Research Protections leadership to support DoW IRB activities with DoW and other federal agencies
- Apportion duties, tasks and responsibilities among program staff to support required administrative activities and reporting of program goals and measures that advance OMM military/civilian partnerships
- Coordinates with offices executing annual reviews and updates to the Training Affiliation Agreements (TAAs) and Memoranda of Agreement & Understanding (MOAs & MOUs) with USAFSAM, 55 Medical Group or equivalent military/federal offices, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Nebraska Medicine, Children's Nebraska and Children's Specialty Physicians, ensuring visibility and coordination of military/civilian partnership training activities across the enterprise
- Operational support of the C-STARS Omaha team and their facilities at UNMC
MMI Roles and Responsibilities:
- Find opportunities, advise on strategies and help develop grant and contract applications of MMI to armed forces, DOD and VA system
- Work diligently to establish an ACT clinic at, or near the Offutt Air Force Base that would serve as a model for the nation and armed forces
- Practice as a developmental pediatrician one afternoon/month at MMI
