Utah Valley University offers a unique opportunity for a highly skilled professional to play a strategic leadership role in guiding the institution's tax compliance framework. The Director of Tax Compliance serves as the University's subject matter expert on complex tax matters affecting higher education, including federal, state, local, and international regulations. The role provides meaningful influence across the institution by shaping tax policies, advising leadership and key departments, and ensuring the University's positions remain compliant, well-documented, and aligned with evolving regulatory requirements.
This position is ideal for someone who values both technical depth and collaborative impact. The Director partners closely with units such as Payroll, Purchasing, Accounts Payable, People & Culture, and the Office of General Counsel, acting as a trusted advisor on a wide range of tax issues. In addition to overseeing accurate and timely tax filings and monitoring nexus considerations, the role offers the opportunity to proactively research emerging trends, strengthen internal processes, and build a culture of informed compliance.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Operational leader for the tax function, ensuring that university-wide tax practices are in compliance with federal, state and local tax laws as well as other regulatory requirements.
- Manage the preparation, review and timely filing of the University's annual Form 990-T and Form 1042, as well as UVU Foundation's annual Form 990 and Form 990-T.
- Provide UBIT (unrelated business income tax) subject matter expertise to various UVU business units and conduct planning, analysis and continuous communication regarding UBIT, UBIT estimates, and UBIT sources. Research and analyze tax matters domestically and internationally and monitor and research new tax/regulatory laws and regulations as they arise to find solutions for compliance.
- Prepare, oversee, review and/or consult on the timely and compliant completion of IRS Forms 1099, 1042-S, 8849, and 1098-T as well as payroll-related filings (Form 941 and W-2s).
- Support Purchasing and Accounts Payable processes, serving as both tax subject matter expert and operational leader, especially for independent contractor status review and determinations.
- Manage the sales tax reporting process, including the monthly sales tax submission to the Utah State Tax Commission.
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, CPA certification, and 3 years of related work experience. Preferred: Master's Degree in Accounting, CPA certification, and 5 years of related work experience, Specialization in Tax Compliance for public institutions. A current Utah Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is required.
