Why your role matters

The Educational Developer, Numeracy is a key role within the Student Learning – Learning Hub team in the Pro-Vice Chancellor Education (PVCE) portfolio at UNSW. The position leads the design and development of high-quality online learning modules to strengthen students’ mathematical and numeracy capabilities across the University. Working collaboratively with faculties, the role undertakes a comprehensive audit of existing central and faculty-based mathematics support resources, conducts gap analyses, and develops tailored, accessible materials that respond to diverse student learning needs. The position also coordinates a strategic approach to evaluating the impact and effectiveness of numeracy initiatives.

Success in this role requires building and maintaining strong, productive relationships with academic and professional staff across UNSW, including engagement with the Numeracy Working Group, the School of Mathematics and Statistics, the UDL Guild and Nexus. The role reports to the Lead, Learning Hub and has no direct reports.

Specific accountabilities include:

  • Conduct a gap analysis to identify where additional supports are needed and develop numeracy and mathematical support resources that can be embedded in classes, working collaboratively with program and/or course convenors to provide guidance on how best to embed support based on best practice pedagogy and reflecting principles of universal design and inclusive teaching.
  • Collaborate with Numeracy Project Manager to develop a project plan and implementation.
  • Work in partnership with the academics and/or professional staff to design, develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based, systemic and responsive numeracy and mathematics learning support.

About You:

  • Tertiary qualification in mathematics with substantial experience in teaching and developing mathematics learning resources in a high school and/or university context.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the NSW high school mathematics curriculum and how to support students with mathematics, specifically how to uplift their comprehension and confidence.
  • Demonstrated experience in negotiating and influencing teams on best practice approaches
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to proactively manage workload. Demonstrated self-motivation, initiative and judgement and the ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of pedagogy, scaffolded and blended learning and experience developing pedagogically appropriate digital educational resources.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of common Learning Management Systems and tools like Numbas and LaTex for creating digital educational resources or of similar experience, and ability to identify opportunities to enhance the student learning experience.
  • Experience and/or expertise in Universal Design for Learning and teaching for equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, course design, formative and summative assessment and learning and teaching approaches that promote student academic learning and development.
