Professional Responsibilities:
- Work with internal and external departments for the scheduling of hands-on learning courses in the simulation center of the OR Training Center (ORTC) and/or the Simulation Center (SIM LAB) at University of Michigan Health (UMH).
- Works on education plans and communicates collectively with other ENC, team leads, and leadership within the department.
- Research: Participates in the data collection of clinical practice that is driven by theory and experience in the perioperative area, to assess and change teaching methods and content of the clinical education practice of the learner.
- Using the AORN Standards and Practice Guidelines will independently develop, implement, and evaluate the use of teaching tools in the simulation setting and the ORTC for new hires.
- Will be knowledgeable regarding the clinical practices of the adult Urology, General Surgery, Transplant, Orthopaedic, Ophthalmology, and/or Plastic surgery departments.
- Seeks out additional education resources beyond the surgery department, such as government regulations, AORN, The Joint Commission, OSHA, AAMI standards.
- Demonstrates ease in application and location of hospital and surgical policies, procedures, and protocols to train and teach new hires in the simulation setting.
- Communicates to CND/supervisor when there are concerns related to patient safety in regard to the new hires competency level in the ORTC and clinical simulation area related to orientation.
- Seeks out additional learning experiences by observing the clinical practice of all units in the University Hospital surgery department.
- Will act as an educator of new and present staff, in both circulating and scrub roles, related to POD specific or general perioperative policies, procedures, and/or practices.
- Utilizes own knowledge/skills to improve staff professional development activities.
- Demonstrates an awareness of current literature in area of practice for surgical nursing, instrument care, and surgical technologist.
- Identifies areas for creative improvement in practice setting and seeks out resources and avenues to address them.
- Works collaboratively with the leadership, service lead and education teams for the assigned surgical services.
- Education of all new hires within University Hospital operating rooms.
- Maintains accurate record of experiences, progress, and evaluations related to orientation.
- Schedules collaborative education opportunities with other disciplines.
Professional Relationships:
- Possesses clarity on one’s own values and how they affect interactions, relationships, and boundary settings.
- Individualizes communication and learning based on assessment of the students or new hires understanding of adult learning practices.
- Incorporates patient/family outcomes in the educational process while training and educating new hires, students and new orientees in the surgical department.
- Mobilizes and/or provides appropriate resources in response to situations that question standard practices within the University Hospital Operating Room by using evidence-based practices.
- Recognizes ethical issues and seeks assistance in addressing them.
- Recognizes and values professional collaborative communication and standard practice in the surgical department and the positive effect on patient outcomes.
- Identifies and utilizes collaborative resources for the purpose of education and training.
- Functions as a supportive team member, while working alongside and in collaboration with other unit level ENC as peer, to work on new hire education and re-education of current staff.
- Demonstrates empathy and compassion in interactions with new hires, new orientees, students, and all staff that require education.
Supervision Received: Supervision is received from Clinical Nurse Director of the UH OR or other designated official.
Qualifications:
- Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Five (5) years of nursing experience as a RN in the perioperative area.
- Recent working knowledge within at least two of the following services: Urology, Acute Care Surgery, Transplant Surgery, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery and/or Plastic surgery surgical services.
- Valid unrestricted driver's license, which is monitored and must meet all UM and Department requirements to drive on behalf of the University of Michigan.
- CNOR within two (2) years of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
- BSN preferred.
- Knowledge of the University of Michigan Health policies and practices.
- Knowledge of the University of Michigan Health web-based programs.
- Demonstrates computer competency including the use of Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point.
- Demonstrates the ability to develop, implement and evaluate clinical or educational programs.
- Demonstrates organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of AORN Periop 101 program.
- Effectively communicates orally and in writing in a non-confrontational approach.
- Demonstrates ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers and subordinates.
Salary & Nursing Framework Level: This UMPNC RN posting is posted under the Role-Specific Advancement Model (RSAM) as: ENC- COMPETENT. Actual RSAM LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire. RSAM levels range from ENC-COMPETENT to ENC-EXPERT TO ENC-MASTERY.
Hours/Week: 40 hours per week. Shift/Hours: Predominately day shift; flexibility required, hours will vary Monday through Friday. Responsibilities: 0.8 FTE ENC role, 0.2 FTE clinical staffing. Location: University Hospital Operating Rooms - Perioperative Services. All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
