ELL Instructor (Part Time)
GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
Under limited supervision, the instructor is responsible for teaching non-credit English Language and Literacy (ELL) courses to students enrolled in Kirkwood's Adult Education and Literacy Programs. Instruction will take place face-to-face in one of these locations: Cedar Rapids, Coralville, or Iowa City. At times there might be travel to other Kirkwood locations for meetings. The instructor also assists students in transitioning from ELL courses to Kirkwood-related work training and higher education opportunities in collaboration with other Kirkwood staff.
Classes are held Monday through Thursday. The session dates for this program year include: July 8- September 10, 2026; September 28- December 10, 2026; January 11- March 11, 2027; March 29- June 3, 2027. Class times vary by location:
Cedar Rapids: 8:30-10:30 AM, 10:40-12:40 PM, 5:30-7:30 PM
Coralville: 9:10- 11:10 AM, 6:00- 8:00 PM
Iowa City: 8:30- 10:30 AM, 10:45-12:45 PM
There are currently openings at all locations with times varying between morning and evening.The total hours per week for one class equates to 10 hours, with limited extra hours being available for team meetings, special projects, and professional development. While previous teaching experience (any subject, but literacy, language, or ELL preferred) is encouraged, there is no licensing requirement.

- Conduct CASAS assessments for eligible students.
- Perform other related work duties as assigned.
- Provide contextualized, scaffolder, interactive instruction that includes cooperative learning tasks and implements ELL college and career readiness and CASAS ELL standards.
- Track attendance daily and submit reports.
- Respond in a timely matter to communications and requests from program director and coordinator.
- Participate in weekly team meetings and ongoing professional development opportunities.
