Engineering Laboratory Manager
DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for machine shop and project workspace management, preparation of equipment and materials for appropriate laboratory courses, purchase and inventory of small equipment and supplies, and budget monitoring. Additional responsibilities include monitoring safety policies and training, and assisting faculty in planning and implementing laboratory activities.
OUTCOME:
Smooth operation of labs, where all students are able to learn good laboratory technique, responsible and safe handling of materials and data collection/analysis skills. Efficient and safe purchase, handling, and disposal of laboratory materials or chemicals. Supplies and equipment will be purchased from reliable vendors at the most reasonable price. Storage and disposal of chemicals will be constantly monitored for safety, accuracy, and all other compliance issues.
- Manages Inventory and Prepares Labs (40%)
- Ensures that appropriate equipment and materials are prepared for teaching labs
- Orders and maintains appropriate inventory of materials and supplies for all engineering programs as directed
- Performs or arranges routine maintenance of general use laboratory equipment and keeps general purpose supplies in stock
- Manages the equipment and supply budget, along with the department chairs
- Ensures Safety (40%)
- Conducts safety training for all engineering faculty. Maintains an updated chemical hygiene plan for the engineering departments
- Serves as the Engineering Departments' Safety Officer as outlined in the Chemical Hygiene Plan and a member of the institution's Safety Committee
- Manages chemical waste facilities
- Supervises Machine Shop and Laboratory Activities (20%)
- Assists shop manager in ensuring safe machining practices are maintained by students working in the machine shop
- Provides times to supervise students in the machine shop when shop supervisors are not present
- Assists the ECE technician in testing, repairing, installing, and maintaining electrical and electronic equipment
- B.S. in an Engineering discipline or a related science field
- At least one year experience working in a science lab setting, machine shop or electrical shop
