The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

An exciting opportunity for an Engineering Workshop Technician within the Faculty of Engineering. The role is essential for supporting undergraduate teaching, manufacturing specialised components, and maintaining the seamless operation of the faculty's engineering workshops.

You will play a pivotal role in the hands-on education of undergraduate students, providing technical support for practical sessions, guiding students in applications, and ensuring the safe operation of workshop equipment. Additionally, the technician is responsible for manufacturing custom components required for research and teaching projects, as well as maintaining and repairing engineering equipment.

About you

We welcome applications through two pathways:

Experienced Technician Route: Candidates with an Advanced City & Guilds or BTEC Higher National Certificate/Diploma in an Engineering subject who have completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship. Experience in the full range of conventional and CNC machine tools, together with an understanding of Health and Safety legislation in a workshop setting, is essential.

Degree Apprenticeship Route: We are also pleased to offer this role as part of a Degree Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering. This pathway provides an excellent opportunity to “earn while you learn,” gaining hands-on technical experience in the workshop while studying towards a BEng in Mechanical Engineering. This route is well-suited to individuals looking to develop their career in engineering through practical training combined with an accredited university qualification.

How to apply

For more information or to be considered for the role, please apply with your CV and cover letter on the University website. You will also be asked to address some brief questions to help us assess your suitability for the role.

Further details

We can offer a generous remuneration package, which includes relocation assistance where appropriate, an attractive research environment, the latest teaching facilities, and access to a variety of staff development opportunities.

The University of Surrey is committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equal opportunities for all. We place great value on diversity and are seeking to increase the diversity within our community. Therefore we particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups, such as people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities.
