Job Summary

The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a FUSE Student Researcher in Biology on the Gainesville campus. This position will conduct research with box turtles. This is a short-term position associated with a project to examine box turtle behavior and physiological characteristics. The Student Assistant will, with mentorship, conduct a literature review, design an investigation into box turtle nesting ecology, and conduct field work, including using radiotelemetry to locate turtles and collect data associated with an ongoing research project. The research assistant will join the FUSE program to conduct focused and meaningful research, scholarly and creative activities alongside faculty researchers from June 1 - July 24, 2026. This includes in-person workshops and group meetings once a week for the duration of the program. Field work, data analyses, and student-faculty meetings will take place on the Gainesville campus. Some meetings may require travel to the Dahlonega campus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a literature review and lead the design of a study to investigated nesting behavior
  • Use radiotelemetry to find research animals.
  • Make behavioral and physiological observations for data collection.
  • Take morphological and weight measurements of turtles.
  • Collect environmental and turtle temperatures using thermometers and data loggers.
  • Use Excel to compile and analyze data.
  • Develop presentation(s) and/or poster for presentation at a scientific meeting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledgeable in Excel.
  • Ability to work in the field, which may include strenuous activities in hot and humid weather.

Required Qualifications

  • Current UNG student not graduating before December 2026.
  • Ability to work in the field, which may include strenuous activities in hot and humid weather.
  • Prior class or work experience in a laboratory setting.

Proposed Salary

$12.00 per hour
