Job Duties:

The Health Sciences Librarian supports the university goals to be excellent in inter-disciplinary research and graduate highly educated individuals at all degree levels. Working under the leadership of the Research & Academic Outreach Lead, position responsibilities include the following:

  • providing effective delivery of instruction and consultations to students, staff and faculty
  • implementing instruction and co-curricular programs in the College of Health Professions & Sciences and the Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health
  • engaging in academic outreach to assigned departments
  • contributing to programs that educate graduate students and faculty on established and emerging practices in scholarly communication.

This position is expected to provide excellent customer service in a professional manner, serve as a resource to others, and be a model representative of UWM and the Libraries. We welcome applications from newly graduated and early career librarians.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Develops, curates, and manages collections
  • May direct the day-to-day activities of student workers
  • Serves on committees to advance librarianship at the campus, local, and/or state and national levels
  • Serves as a liaison to academic disciplines and/or other campus units providing information on collections, instructional and research support, and library services
  • Initiates and solicits input to modify policies, procedures, and assessment tools to improve workflows and/or user experiences
  • Serves as a resource to other librarians and staff outside of their unit on a regular basis
  • Oversees day-to-day functions of one or more library operations or services
  • Provides specialized services utilizing a high level of expertise on a broad range of disciplines or in a designated discipline area
  • Designs, develops, delivers, and assesses instruction in a variety of formats to faculty, staff, students, and other patrons
  • Obtains materials, resolves issues, and answers questions that are complex and highly specialized in nature
  • Cultivates and maintains productive relationships with donors, collectors, vendors, and professional colleagues
  • Develops or coordinates specialized projects or programs

Department: User Services

Compensation: $52,000 - $58,000

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a liaison to nursing, health sciences, and related disciplines and/or other campus units as assigned by providing information on collections, instructional and research support, and library services.
  • Cultivates and maintains productive relationships with health science information professional colleagues.
  • Obtains materials, resolves issues, and answers questions that are complex and highly specialized in nature.
  • Designs, develops, delivers, and assesses instruction in a variety of formats to faculty, staff, students, and other patrons.
  • Provides specialized services utilizing a high level of expertise in a designated health discipline area, e.g., systematic reviews, literature synthesis.
  • Develops or coordinates specialized projects or programs, e.g., evidence-based practice tutorial.
  • Serves as a resource to other librarians and staff outside of their unit on a regular basis, e.g. BSN@Home.
  • Initiates and solicits input to modify policies, procedures, and assessment tools to improve workflows and/or user experiences.
  • Serves on committees to advance librarianship at the campus, local, and/or state and national levels.
  • May direct the day-to-day activities of student workers
  • Partners with faculty and library acquisitions staff to develop, curate, and manage health science resources.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution at time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree, coursework, or equivalent experience in a health-related field.
  • Evidence of experience conducting literature searches in health-related information sources such as PubMed, CINAHL, or Web of Science.
  • Evidence of understanding of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, including Information Literacy Competency Standards for Nursing.
  • Evidence of experience teaching evidence-based practice in an academic library setting or teaching information literacy.
  • Evidence of demonstrated expert searcher skills, such as those performed in support of systematic or other evidence synthesis reviews.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with students and faculty engaged in health science research questions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a collaborative environment while fostering a welcoming and respectful atmosphere.
