The Primary responsibility of this individual is to provide quality instruction to Western Wyoming Community College (Western) students enrolled in musical theatre and acting courses taught at the main campus in Rock Springs and the Green River Center and to direct main stage productions. This individual may also be asked to be musical director, choreographer (dance, fights, or period movement) or other roles depending on qualifications and the department's needs. Teaching courses over a distance education medium, such as online, hybrid, or hyper flexible may also be expected.
This position has teaching and production responsibilities. The typical teaching load for this position is 21 credit hours per academic year. The production portion of this position will entail full direction and oversight of the production process and the teaching of theatre practice; this is for 1-2 shows each year.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR WHICH THIS INDIVIDUAL IS ACCOUNTABLE
- Provides quality instruction to students in various courses in musical theatre, acting, and stage management. Other courses may be developed to fit the successful candidate's expertise and program demand as approved by the School Dean.
- Provides quality learning opportunities for all students in accordance with their needs and abilities while maintaining the basic integrity of the course's standards and objectives. Instruct, assist, and motivate students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed substantive feedback on assignments and discussions.
- Follows department objectives and criteria for each course, follows the Curriculum Committee's guidelines regarding course syllabi, and evaluates students' performance considering these objectives and criteria.
- Advises students clearly and effectively; learns the requirements for Western graduation and for transfer to other regional colleges and universities.
- Maintains an appropriate schedule of office hours that allows on-campus and distance education students to interact and ask questions.
- Oversee adjunct instructors, part time staff, and student workers for musical theatre.
- Management of musical theatre department budget, scholarships, and student workers.
- Develops good working relationships with professionals in this discipline in the College's service area to solicit cooperation and support for curricular planning, recruitment, and other functions
Minimum Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master of Fine Arts Degree in musical theatre or theatre OR a Master's degree in musical theatre, theatre, or related subject with 18 graduate credits in theatre.
OrBachelor of Fine Arts Degree or a Bachelor's degree in musical theatre or theatre with a minimum of 5 years professional experience. - Experience in directing main stage productions and music direction.
- Two years of teaching experience at the college level substantiated by excellent student evaluations and/or letters of recommendation.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and administrators.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in all facets of the student-teacher relationship and to teach a diverse group of community college students.
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Evidence of continued professional development.
Equivalency Statement
For those who do not exactly meet all the minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience that has provided comparable knowledge and abilities may be acceptable.
Preferred Qualifications:
PREFERRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Abilities, Education and Experience)
- Experience using active approaches to learning; experience using alternative methods of learning, such as interactive software, Internet, or individualized modular programs.
- Active participation in relevant professional organizations such as Screen Actors Guild and Actors Equity.
- Demonstrated teaching excellence at a community college.
