Departmental Overview

The Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances (IPIRA) is the portal for industry access to Berkeley, both for research relationships and access to Berkeley technology. The Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) and the Industry Alliances Office (IAO) are peer divisions within IPIRA. The OTL manages and licenses patent and copyrights to the private sector for commercial development is responsible for material transfer agreements for transfers from Berkeley supports entrepreneurial activities including startup company formation maintains relationships with sources of private capital and service providers provides litigation support advises the IAO on intellectual property terms in research and other contracts, and advises the campus on intellectual property, innovation and entrepreneurship. The IAO is responsible for a wide range of research relationships with industry, including industry sponsored research agreements, collaboration agreements, membership agreements such as for industrial consortia, and incoming material transfer agreements.

Position Summary

The junior licensing officer works in the Office of Technology Licensing as part of the administrative group that manages UCB intellectual property. The incumbent supports the patent and licensing activities of the office in the area of physical sciences, including reviewing and analyzing invention disclosure and patent related correspondence; communicating with outside IP counsel, inventors, licensing staff and licensees concerning patent related decisions; becoming proficient in material and data transfer agreements; and learning license negotiations. The candidate will also provide IP-related education, outreach and community building.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, negotiates material testing and transfer agreements.
  • Monitors licensee compliance with all licensing obligations, works with more senior level officers to intervene or initiate action when commitments are not met.
  • Participates in the marketing efforts of new technology to potential industrial partners and startups.
  • Applies intellectual property/technology licensing / transfer professional concepts to evaluate commercial potential, formulate and implement licensing strategy, and negotiate and draft agreements for a portfolio of inventions.
  • Under general supervision, researches and collects data on markets and corporations to identify potential licensees that have the highest probability of successfully commercializing a technology or intellectual property.
  • Under general supervision, advises on basic intellectual property clauses, contracts and agreements in sponsored and collaborative research agreements.
  • Assists with conducting legal and or policy analysis and recommends exceptions to policy.
  • Applies professional intellectual property/technology transfer concepts to analyze and develop commercialization strategies.
  • Assists with determining patentability of institution's inventions.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of and application of standard principles, theories and concepts such as laws, regulations, and practices pertaining to the protection and management of intellectual property, university technology transfer, and general scientific and/or technical skills in subject matter area.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to market technology to industrial partners; knowledge of contracts and grants.
  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $91,500.00 - $95,000.00.

This is an exempt monthly-paid position.
