Job Summary:

The Lead Custodian will perform a full range of custodial work to include: inspecting rooms, apartments, and buildings to ensure cleaning is completed properly before residents move in. Inspections may also be conducted after work orders, special requests, or project deadlines to confirm spaces are ready for use. During walkthroughs, the Lead Custodian checks the quality of work and provides on-the-job training to custodial staff as needed. The Lead Custodian clearly communicates expectations for work quality, supports team members by addressing questions or concerns, and ensures that proper safety procedures and effective cleaning methods are followed. In collaboration with the Supervisor, the lead maintains accurate time records, helps set goals, provides written instructions when necessary, and promotes teamwork among custodial staff, DHRE staff, residents, vendors, and campus partners. The Lead Custodian also provides feedback on employee performance to the Associate Director to support the annual evaluation process.

Responsibilities:

  • Inspections: Lead Custodian will conduct room, apartment, and building inspections of final cleaning before move-in/arrival of resident(s). Inspections may also be required after work order completion, special requests, or project deadlines to ensure room, apartment, building readiness. During walkthroughs Leads will inspect for quality of work and will provide on-the-job- training to Custodial team members where needed. Lead Custodian will communicate clearly about the quality of work expected on assigned tasks and communicate with team members regarding needs, questions, or concerns they may have as it relates to their work. Lead Custodian will ensure proper safety procedures and effective cleaning methods are employed by team members. Lead will work with Supervisor to set goals, provide written detailed instruction as necessary, and develop effective collaboration between Custodial team members, DHRE staff, residents, vendors, and campus colleagues. Lead will provide team members' performance feedback to the Associate Director for potential inclusion in the annual evaluation process.
  • Guidance: Lead Custodian will meet with Custodial team members every morning at the beginning of the work shift to coordinate cleaning duties or re-assign work load to address priority needs. Lead will provide written detailed instruction for vacant rooms, apartments, guest units, or any other special event along with a timeline of expected completion. Lead will also ensure that personnel have proper access such as keys, cards, and any special equipment and/or supplies necessary to complete task.
  • Coverage: Lead Custodian will assist in cleaning of offices, dorms, apartments, restrooms or other Housing areas and prioritize areas of assistance as needed. Lead will assist with coverage as required in the absence of custodial team members. Lead Custodian should be available during campus breaks to check on supply levels and priority cleaning.
  • Damages: Lead Custodian will respond to and assess reports of damages, vandalism, floods or other special circumstances; including health and safety concerns, and possible blood borne pathogens or other bodily fluid containment requiring specialized clean-up procedures. Lead will document damages and take photographs when necessary. Lead will provide cost and time estimates for vandalism or non-routine cleaning required.
  • Communication: Lead Custodian will check emails daily/regularly, as well as campus announcement/correspondence and any other items that relate to Housing Facilities. Lead will provide copies of electronic or other correspondence of Union related material, campus bulletins, and any other items or events that relate to Custodial staff that may not have access to email, campus mailings, or other electronic postings. Lead will communicate with facilities team members and work control via two-way radio. Lead will prepare reports as required by immediate supervisor or administrative staff. Reports may include status of vacant rooms, room conditions, special events, or other set-ups. Lead will provide written/electronic estimate of cleaning charges to immediate supervisor. Lead Custodian should participate in staff meetings to communicate any items of concern as it relates to custodial cleaning, receive input from building staff and residents, and collaborate on creative ways to promote improvements for custodial procedures.
  • Safety: Lead Custodian will help to ensure that all areas and buildings are secure and safe. Lead Custodian will ensure all cleaning supplies and chemicals are appropriately labeled and stored, and that custodial supply closets are locked. Lead Custodian will report any maintenance deficiencies, damages, safety hazards, or other concerns to work control, immediate supervisor, or University Police. Lead Custodian should inspect tools and equipment to ensure functionality; performing minor repairs such as vacuum belts and bag replacement.
  • Inventory: Lead Custodian will maintain supplies and materials stock; keeping inventory of supplies used and producing orders for needed chemicals and supplies to be approved by immediate supervisor. Lead will perform random inspections of custodial supply closets to ensure that they are uncluttered, well stocked, and that all chemicals and bottles are properly labeled. Lead will ensure inventory and availability for First Aid Kits, eye-wash bottles, and personal protective/safety equipment such as gloves, googles, ear plugs, dust masks, and related items, Lead will coordinate the delivery of supplies to custodial closets as needed. Lead will help to conserve Housing resources by monitoring water and electricity usage in the buildings by turning off lights, A/C units when entering spaces that are vacant during all times of the year.

Minimum Qualifications:

Equivalent to one to two years of related custodial experience and providing on-the-job training and leadership to others.

Required Qualifications:

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the methods, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial work and of the safety and sanitation practices and measures; and effective lead/supervisory practices and techniques.

Abilities: Ability to provide lead work direction, including training others in proper work methods and safety and providing feedback on work performance; read and write English at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; use computers to track work orders and order supplies and materials; establish, promote and maintain cooperative work relationships with others; and analyze situations and take appropriate action.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience in Housing or hospitality setting.

Special Working Conditions:

Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4pm
Summer Hours: Monday - Thursday 7am - 5:30pm
Some weekends or work during campus breaks will be required, especially during move-in weekends, coverage during breaks or emergencies.
May be required to lift above 50 lbs

License / Certification

Valid CA driver's license and insurance

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

Initial salary step placement will be $3,596 (Step 1) - $3,970 (Step 6) for qualified candidates.

CSU Classification Salary Step Range: $3,596 - $5,035 per month (Step 1 - Step 18).

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Work status: Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
