Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Energy, Sustainability, and Utilities in the Department of Facilities Management, the HVAC Lead Controls Technician position is a non-exempt (hourly) position that performs complex tasks in the installation, repair, adjustment and modification of electrical controls and electronic and pneumatic instrumentation for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration systems, boiler systems and energy management systems in a physical plant and individual buildings. This position requires the individual to maintain a working relationship with other service departments, primarily the HVAC shop staff. The position requires the employee to periodically work on-call and after-hours for campus utility emergencies and outages.
Essential Functions
In addition to following the University of Denver's policies and procedures, principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Manage building automation systems, both operations and maintenance, leveraging BAS alarm notifications and diagnostics analytics to proactively identify, address and optimize system operations, ensuring system reliability, occupant comfort, and energy conservation and cost management.
- Provide ongoing troubleshooting and operation assessment of HVAC mechanical equipment, working in conjunction with HVAC shop personnel.
- Support strategic implementation of energy conservation and facility improvement measures for campus buildings.
- Support campus HVAC system operations with monitoring of building automation systems during utility emergencies, outages, and special events.
- Manage consultants and contractors to install system upgrades, perform additional programming and program management to meet facility requirements.
- Conducts complex building automation system analysis and design studies and prepares concept and design specifications and management reports.
- Studies, evaluates, and recommends building automation architectures, protocols, standards hardware, software and devices to optimize and modernize campus systems.
- Keeps current on building automation controls maintenance and operational standards with participation in ongoing training and development.
- Provides on-call support for the HVAC shop as required.
- Instructs and leads HVAC controls technicians.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must be able to read and interpret drawings and specifications as it relates to mechanical systems. Must be able to effectively communicate with management, supervisors, co-workers, other staff and faculty within the DU community. Must have good communication skills, both written and verbal and the ability to work in a team-based environment as well as on an independent basis. Basic math skills are required. Ability to self-direct own work and capable of effectively coordinating the work of others. Daily priorities are established by the worker. Employee responds to situations requiring immediate attention. Must be able to prioritize issues on building automation systems and discern when additional resources need to be consulted. Must be very competent in working knowledge of building automation systems which include working with a computer and monitoring these systems via computer. Must be able to troubleshoot these systems when problems arise and be able to change set points and design parameters within the computer programs. Knowledge of IT Network infrastructure. Familiar with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) software, including WebTMA.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D
- 5 Years of experience in building automation systems or equivalent
- Knowledge of HVAC and mechanical systems, electronic instrumentation, and an understanding of direct digital control systems.
- Familiarity with specific software such as Johnson Controls, (Metasys), Trane (Tracer Summit), and Long (Niagara).
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree or equivalent with a technology emphasis in HVAC and/or Building Automation Systems
- Niagara (N4) certification
Working Environment
Standard office environment. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high. Noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities
Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
