Lecturer in French and Francophone Studies

The Department of French and Italian at The Ohio State University seeks a full-time, non-tenure-track Lecturer/Associated Faculty member whose work is grounded in evidence-based language teaching and the scholarship and practice of second language acquisition (SLA)/applied linguistics/world language pedagogy. The successful candidate will teach beginning and intermediate French and will also play a key role in strengthening the French basic language program through course coordination, instructional support, and instructor mentorship.

Contract terms are one year, with the possibility of renewals based on positive performance and department needs. A full-time (100%) appointment typically entails teaching four undergraduate courses per semester. Teaching duties include language courses at the beginning and intermediate levels and may include other undergraduate courses in French or large-enrollment general education courses taught in English depending on department needs and candidate expertise. A defined portion of the workload may be dedicated to French basic language program leadership (e.g., through a service assignment and/or course replacement arrangement), depending on program needs.

Performance Objectives

  • Coordinating multi-section beginning and/or intermediate French (alignment of outcomes, shared materials, common assessments, instructional continuity)
  • Mentoring and supporting instructors (e.g., graduate teaching associates and/or lecturers) through observation, coaching, and professional development
  • Supporting inclusive, effective pedagogy grounded in SLA and current best practices
  • Helping the program develop thoughtful and responsible practices around AI and language learning (pedagogical uses, student guidance, academic integrity, transparency, and ethical implementation consistent with university policy)
  • Participating in required meetings and contributing to a positive and collegial work environment

Other expectations include interacting with students during regular office hours; attending meetings when required; and contributing to a positive work environment. The position is open to all specializations.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree in French and Francophone Studies, Applied Linguistics/SLA, World Language Education, or a related discipline
  • Native or near-native fluency in French and strong proficiency in English
  • Record of excellence in teaching French language courses, especially at the college/university level
  • Demonstrated expertise in SLA/applied linguistics/world language pedagogy and ability to translate that expertise into effective instruction and program practices
  • Evidence of ability or strong potential to contribute to language program leadership (e.g., course coordination, mentoring, TA training, curriculum/materials development, assessment support)
  • Strong understanding of current best practices in second language pedagogy and commitment to continued professional development
  • Versatility to teach multiple levels and, as needed, large-enrollment courses taught in English
  • Willingness and ability to teach either face-to-face or online as needed
  • Willingness to teach anytime between 8:00 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. weekdays as needed
  • Ability to work collegially and effectively with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and foster an inclusive classroom environment

Desired Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in French and Francophone Studies, Applied Linguistics/SLA, World Language Education, or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating multi-section language courses and/or mentoring instructors
  • Familiarity with synchronous and asynchronous online tools for language teaching
  • Experience engaging with AI-supported language learning (e.g., pedagogical integration, student/instructor guidance, ethical use and transparency)
