Department Summary

The University Library User Services unit develops and provides services that connect SDSU Library users to library resources (collections, people, spaces, technology). User Services is the primary point of contact for library users. It strives to make the library user's experience positive and rewarding. The unit's functions are central to the SDSU Library's daily operations.

As the library's primary point of contact, User Services aims to build users' library literacy by educating them on available resources, explaining library policy, connecting them to resources, answering questions, and resolving issues. User Services provides quality customer service through consistent staff presence, acknowledgement of users, use of standardized language for library terminology, and efficient problem resolution.

Users can come to User Services for assistance at any part of the access and retrieval process of the SDSU collections, from borrowing material to locating mis-shelved books to acquiring material from other libraries. User Services oversees library spaces crucial to student learning, such as study spaces, quiet study areas, and study rooms. Because the unit keeps the buildings open, User Services personnel are the first responders to building issues and emergencies.

User Services is comprised of the Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning, and Research Services, 1 faculty librarian, 9 library support staff, and student assistant support.

We develop comprehensive services that contribute to student success, including information literacy instruction, student research engagement, providing access to affordable educational materials, ensuring accessibility across a range of abilities, and providing the technologies necessary for student retention and persistence. We strive to support the success of the whole student both in and out of the classroom by creating programming and spaces that support student wellness and promote lifelong learning. We collaborate with faculty to fulfill SDSU's teaching and research missions. We emphasize the importance of information literacy and provide faculty with the support structures necessary to advance their curricular and research agendas.
