Medical Education & Instruction Librarian
Position Summary
The Medical Education & Instruction Librarian enhances health sciences education, research, and patient care at the University of Georgia School of Medicine (UGA SOM). This full-time, non-tenure track faculty role focuses on sustaining the new UGA School of Medicine’s medical educational mission through the planning, development, delivery, and evaluation of quality health instruction and information.
The Medical Education & Instruction Librarian plays a crucial role in improving healthcare education and patient care by equipping faculty and students with the knowledge and skills to find and evaluate evidence-based information for clinical decision-making, research, and professional development. This faculty member serves as a member of the UGA SOM Library team. The Medical Education & Instruction Librarian supports the School of Medicine’s mission to educate excellent physicians while demonstrating the core values of curiosity, teamwork, and commitment to excellence through innovative information resources and a welcoming library environment that fosters lifelong learning and the development of Georgia’s healthcare workforce.
Key responsibilities include providing information services for UGA SOM students as they complete their 4-year medical school degree. Primary duties include leading and coordinating educational programs, scholarship, teaching, and learning. The Medical Education & Instruction Librarian is expected to allocate their time across all four years (pre-clerkship and clerkship years) of medical education.
As a member of the School of Medicine faculty, the Medical Education & Instruction Librarian reports directly to the Director of the UGA School of Medicine Library while maintaining a close working relationship with the UGA Libraries faculty. The Medical Education & Instruction Librarian will also collaborate with UGA SOM faculty to embed library instruction and evidence-based research skills within courses and clinical training programs.
The position is a non-tenure track faculty appointment at the rank of Librarian II, Librarian III, or Librarian IV commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications
- An ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or a terminal degree in a related field.
Additional Requirements
- A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience (post-MLS or in health sciences practice).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Knowledge in health information resources and services (e.g., PubMed, UptoDate, ClinicalKey).
- Background in working with health professional faculty, students, and/or clinicians.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective instruction sessions for individuals and groups in the classroom and/or clinical settings.
- Demonstrated ability to develop instructional support materials in various formats or strong interest in doing so.
- Expertise in teaching evidence-based medicine topics, including the ability to develop and deliver educational programs that enhance information literacy and support evidence-based healthcare practices.
- Demonstrated ability to efficiently manage and implement multiple projects and priorities, ensuring timely and successful completion of tasks.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong collaborative planning and problem-solving abilities, with a proven track record of working effectively with teams to achieve goals.
- Proficiency with LibGuides or similar tools for creating online research guides.
- Familiarity with citation management software.
- Understanding of the academic healthcare environment and the librarian’s role within it.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the UGA SOM Library team to provide instruction for faculty, staff, and students on teaching, research, and learning information needs.
- Lead educational programs on information literacy, evidence-based healthcare, and curriculum-related activities in Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) for faculty and learners.
- Potential opportunities to serve as a faculty instructor for academic half days, teaching evidence-based information topics in collaboration with the UGA SOM Library team.
- Equip faculty and medical students with the tools to locate and organize relevant information for patient care and scholarly activities.
- Work collaboratively with medical faculty and students on their scholarly activities, including grant and manuscript submissions, and research consultations.
- Participates in the assessment of student learning outcomes related to information literacy and evidence-based practice competencies.
- Navigate technology needs, such as mobile applications and reliable, online health information platforms.
- Provide reference services via phone, email, and remote access.
- Provide consultations, assistance, and instruction both in person and virtually, including for complex queries.
- Manage the library’s print collection and collaborate with the Library Director on collection development strategies and acquisitions decisions.
- Maintain current knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in medical education to support faculty and student AI literacy and evaluate emerging AI-powered research tools.
- Participate in working groups, campus programs, and committees as assigned.
- Be active professionally in local, regional, and/or national associations and contribute to the professional literature.
- Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
