We are seeking a Nocturnist Physician Assistant in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, working as an independent clinician within a team setting providing ICU-level care to patients in the Neuro Critical Care Unit with a medical staff appointment at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital, working 100% nights. The Nocturnist, consistent with the area of practice and privileges, will be responsible during the night shift for providing ICU- level care to Neuro patients.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Conducts comprehensive and/or episodic health assessments for critically ill adults in the Neuro Critical Care Unit.
- Records and documents assessment data necessary to maintain, coordinate, and/or expedite required services.
- Perform history and physical exams, discriminating between normal and abnormal findings.
- Identify differential diagnosis.
Establishes a Plan of Care including
- Order appropriate lab, radiographic, and other studies.
- Appropriately interpret results of lab, radiographic, and other studies.
- Performs tests and procedures as indicated within the scope of practice.
- Establish a plan of care related to patient’s identified problems, including medication and therapeutic procedures.
- Consult with other team members regarding proposed treatment guidelines as necessary.
Implements Plan of Care safely and effectively. This will include
- Prescribe and regulate medications and perform other related procedures within the Maryland Board of Nursing scope of practice for the Nurse Practitioner.
- Record patient visit/interaction in a concise, clear, logical, and timely manner.
- Arrange referrals to appropriate specialties when needed.
- Triage patient telephone calls, messages, and interactions appropriately.
- Tracks patient compliance with treatment plan.
Organizes workload to meet patient and organizational needs including
- Utilize time management to see patients efficiently as identified by departmental goals.
- Maintain consistent level of productivity. Identifies problems that impede overall functioning and initiates appropriate interventions.
- Work collaboratively with the health team members to facilitate smooth operations of the unit.
Communicates with healthcare team members to ensure patient and organizational needs are met. This will include
- Supervise the activities of team members as appropriate.
- Identify areas of weakness in operational systems and make recommendations for improvements.
- Communicate significant information in an organized, logical, and concise manner to co-workers.
- Provide constructive feedback as it relates to performance in an appropriate manner.
- Adheres to the confidentiality policy as outlined in the interdisciplinary Clinical Practice Manual.
- Make recommendations to administrative leadership related to Clinic administrative operations.
- Analyzes research findings and current trends in the area of specialty and applies the information, as appropriate, to improve the management of patient care.
Participates in the development of the interdisciplinary team.
- Supports the orientation of newly hired nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner students.
- Supports the education of the interdisciplinary team.
Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure organizational goals are met.
- Supports quality and safety initiatives.
- Supports the institution's Core Values.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP-certified Physician Assistant program.
- Must be licensed as a PA in the State of Maryland or in the state where practicing.
- Current CPR certification by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross required
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: $120,000 - $152,900 Annually ($140,000 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
