Nurse Practitioner (Otolaryngology)

Job Details

Johns Hopkins, founded in 1876, is America's first research university and home to nine world-class academic divisions working together as one university.

We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in Pediatric Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery who will provide high-quality, patient-centered care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to train alongside a diverse surgeon team, develop procedural expertise, and ultimately practice with a high degree of independence and collaboration.

The NP will support the perioperative pediatric otolaryngology service line, serving as an integral member of the pediatric otolaryngology team, ensuring seamless coordination of care across the emergency department, inpatient wards, intensive care unit, operating room, and outpatient clinics. This individual will help to drive innovations in perioperative protocols, multidisciplinary collaboration, and electronic care pathways that contribute to patient safety, care efficiency, and quality outcomes. Candidates should be compassionate, highly motivated to learn and become independent, goal-oriented, and dedicated to caring for children with complex pediatric otolaryngology needs. Prior experience in pediatric or surgical care is highly desirable.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Inpatient Care

  • Evaluate and manage inpatient consults under supervision, progressing to independent practice with faculty support.
  • Assist in procedures (inside and outside of the operating room), including airway endoscopy, nasal endoscopy, swallow evaluations, control of epistaxis, incision and drainage, biopsies, and tympanostomy tube placement; NP will perform some procedures independently after completion of supervised training and demonstrated competency.
  • Develop, coordinate, and lead multidisciplinary tracheostomy rounds.
  • Collaborate with attending surgeons, house staff, nursing, and allied health teams to ensure seamless patient care from admission through discharge.
  • Communicate directly with ED, ICU, inpatient, and surgical teams to optimize transitions of care. Facilitate patient order and discharge education as necessary.

Outpatient Care

  • Support attending surgeons in outpatient clinics.
  • Conduct routine independent clinic sessions after completion of supervised training and demonstrated competency.
  • Work with nursing triage to address complex patient issues, including postoperative concerns and chronic pediatric otolaryngologic conditions.
  • Provide patient and family education with emphasis on compassionate communication and shared decision-making.

Program Development & Innovation

  • Develop and implement standardized perioperative care protocols.
  • Create and refine electronic order sets, case requests, and consent pathways to enhance efficiency and safety.
  • Participate in, and help organize, multidisciplinary conferences focused on comprehensive patient management in pediatric otolaryngology.
  • Collaborate with peers and institutional APP networks to share best practices and support professional development.

Professional Expectations

  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to work in diverse clinical settings (inpatient, outpatient, OR).
  • Navigate the electronic medical record (EMR) to optimize patient care and workflow efficiency.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives and service development projects.
  • Model patient-centered care and foster trust with children, families, and colleagues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
  • Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Related experience or education in a pediatric, surgical, and/or procedure-oriented field strongly preferred.
