Job Description
The School of Performing Arts seeks a .75 FTE Instructor of Double Reeds (oboe and bassoon) for an academic year (9-month) appointment. The initial contract will be for one-year beginning August 10, 2026 with the opportunity for renewal as supported by performance, need, and funding.
The primary responsibilities include teaching applied oboe and bassoon lessons, developing and sustaining a vibrant double reed studio, and contributing to ensemble coaching and performance-area activities (studio classes, juries, auditions, and student recitals). Depending on studio enrollments and programmatic needs, the faculty member may teach courses in music general education or in an area aligned with the candidate's expertise.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach applied oboe and bassoon at the undergraduate (and, as appropriate, graduate) level; organize studio classes; prepare students for juries, auditions, and degree recitals.
- Develop and sustain the double reed studio through recruiting, outreach, and student mentorship.
- Coach chamber ensembles and collaborate with area coordinators and conductors on performance activities.
- As needed, teach music general education courses or courses aligned with the candidate's expertise (e.g., Music Theory/Musicianship, Music Technology, Music Business and Industry).
- Participate in audition days, advising, and program activities that support student success.
Teaching Assignment and Workload
Expected teaching assignment of three (3) courses per semester. Specific load may combine applied lessons, ensemble coaching, and lecture courses as appropriate to meet program needs.
Professional Engagement
This appointment is primarily teaching-focused and does not carry formal research or service requirements. However, the School welcomes and encourages engagement in creative activity (performances, recordings, reed-making workshops), applied research or pedagogy, and service to the School, College, University, and profession as feasible. Participation in recruiting events, faculty collaborations, and appropriate professional organizations is valued.

Faculty collaborate across the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design to support student learning and creative work.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate degree in music (e.g., M.M. or equivalent) by the start date, or commensurate professional experience in oboe and/or bassoon performance and pedagogy.
- Demonstrated excellence in applied teaching for oboe and bassoon and in building/maintaining a studio.
- Ability to work effectively with learners from varied backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Terminal degree in music or a closely related field (e.g., D.M.A. or equivalent)
- Success in recruiting and retaining double reed students; experience coaching chamber ensembles.
- Experience teaching reed making and studio classes; ability to teach in a secondary area (e.g., Music Theory/Musicianship, Music Technology, Music Business and Industry).
- Record of collaborative engagement across arts and allied fields; experience supporting auditions and outreach.
