General Statement of Duties: The Veterinary Technology Program Laboratory Assistant works directly with North Shore Community College faculty, staff and students. The goal is to promote student success and foster working within a veterinary team environment by providing students with an instructive, hands-on learning experience. This position provides support to course instructors by performing a variety of functions under the supervision of the instructor. Functions include preparation for laboratory sessions, as well as the teaching, mentorship, and oversight of students.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist the instructor in the oversight of all laboratory activities for a specific course
  • Assist with the set-up of needed equipment, materials and supplies for each lab session under the supervision of the course instructor
  • Assist with laboratory clean up and in ensuring that the laboratory space is left clean, neat and organized
  • Follow and enforce safety guidelines at all times, including IACUC protocols
  • Maintain a safe and supportive atmosphere for all students
  • Observe student performance and provide feedback to the course instructor
  • Be familiar with all procedures and skills involved in each laboratory session, including but not limited to: Animal restraint (cats and dogs), for a variety of procedures including, but not limited to, physical exams and phlebotomy; Drawing up and administering immunizations to cats and dogs; Conducting nail trims, applying bandages, obtaining samples for analysis (ear swabs, urine, feces, blood, etc.); Obtaining radiographs on patients; Performing client education
  • Assist the instructor by providing instructional support for course topics
  • Attend all scheduled laboratory sessions
  • Attend meetings and training as scheduled by the course instructor or program coordinator
  • Follow Northshore Community College and the Veterinary Technology Program policies and procedures

Job Requirements:

  • Must be a credentialed veterinary technician in MA
  • Associate degree or higher
  • Must be knowledgeable in specified course content
  • One or more years of experience working directly with animals
  • Experience working in a Veterinary Clinic/Hospital for General Practice
  • Ability to contribute to a positive and supportive team culture
  • Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations
  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment
