Offer Description
Activities and context
We seek a post-doctoral researcher to study the evolution and distribution of proteins involved in inter-organismal conflicts. Immunity proteins and toxins are highly diverse, making them difficult to detect by conventional homology searches. The project will combine remote homology searches, structure-based phylogenetics, and gene-neighborhood/network analysis to map loci across bacterial lineages, discover novel toxin–antitoxin systems, and understand how bacterial defense repertoires are organized across environments and conflict pressures.
Mandatory requirements
- PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular evolution, genomics, microbiology, genetics, or a related field, obtained no more than 7 years before the start of the fellowship;
- Solid experience in large-scale comparative genomics and/or protein sequence and structure analysis;
- Proficiency in scripting/programming (e.g. Python) and comfort working in Linux/HPC environments with large datasets;
- Experience with phylogenetics and homology detection tools;
- Strong written and spoken English; ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Desirable requirements
- Familiarity with protein language models, deep learning, and network/graph analysis;
- Experience with structural bioinformatics, metagenomics, or analysis of mobile genetic elements;
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications.
How to apply
Send to cepid-b3@iq.usp.br with the subject “Postdoc 1 – Bioinfo – CEPID B3”: (1) a cover letter describing your research experience and interests; (2) a full CV (or Lattes/ORCID link); (3) contact details of two references, and (4) a motivation letter. Review of applications will begin on September 2, 2026.
This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationality.
