Are you a recent Ph.D. graduate in STEM or social sciences interested in a career path in open science, science communication, science policy, or academic librarianship? Join the team of the Open Science & Data Collaborations program at Carnegie Mellon University Libraries to help foster a more open, reproducible, and collaborative research landscape.

The Postdoctoral Associate in Open Science should be technically-skilled, have a strong understanding of academic research and the research data ecosystem, be passionate about building an open and collaborative research community, and committed to developing a research and teaching agenda on topics related to open science. This is a fixed term 2-year position with 50% of time devoted to research and 50% to teaching, community-building activities, and providing research services.

Under the supervision of the Director of the Open Science Program, the successful candidate will:

  • Conduct collaborative research on open science topics, such as developing open science assessment metrics, developing tools and methods that help to enhance research transparency and reproducibility, understanding open science and data reuse needs and practices in different research communities;
  • Teach lessons and workshops such as data processing and analysis using R or Python, tools and best practices for data management, computational best practices for open and reproducible research. Develop teaching materials that include interactive activities and hands-on examples;
  • Serve on organizing and programming committees of open science events hosted by the program, including the annual Open Science Symposium;
  • Serve as a consultant for our data and coding consultation service;
  • Assist in the outreach effort of the program and support of research tools such as Open Science Framework, LabArchives, Jupyter Notebook, R, Python, and GitHub;
  • Conduct program needs assessments to remain responsive to users needs and help improve the program;
  • Contribute to international research communities with poster presentations or talks on open science research.

What We Require:

  • Ph.D. in a science, technology, engineering, or social sciences discipline;
  • Strong interest in building an open science community across disciplinary boundaries and advancing open scholarship and reproducible research;
  • Enthusiasm for working collaboratively with library personnel on research projects, instructional design, and developing services.

What We Would Like You To Have:

  • Strong track record in academic research in a discipline that is well established at CMU (relevant research experience in industry or government also considered);
  • Demonstrated record of teaching excellence in academic settings including hands-on training or training others in research skills. Interest in refining teaching skills and curriculum development;
  • Experience managing, analyzing, or working with complex research data;
  • Understanding of computational reproducibility best practices;
  • Experience with one or more programming languages commonly used in research such as R or Python;
  • Understanding of tools used for reproducible research such as Git/GitHub, Jupyter Notebook, Binder, Docker, Open Science Framework;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact with diverse groups including faculty, students, staff, and administrators;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and presentation skills;
  • Dedication to professional development including personal research and scholarship and growth of skills;
  • Interest in contributing to the global open science community.
