Position Summary

The Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs is the Chief Academic Officer of the university and reports directly to the Chancellor. The Provost is a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and serves as the ranking university officer at the university in the Chancellor’s absence.

As the Chief Academic Officer, the Provost is supported by the Associate Provost, and has the following colleges, programs and offices as direct reports: College of Arts and Communication; College of Business and Economics; College of Education and Professional Studies; College of Integrated Studies; College of Letters and Sciences; School of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education; Office of Institutional Research, Assessment and Planning; and Global Education.

Responsibilities

The Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs is responsible for administering all academic programs in association with the Deans and other members of the Academic Affairs staff, as well as:

Ensuring and enhancing the quality of undergraduate and graduate education.

  • Support optimization of student learning and student success through oversight of academic assessment initiatives, and monitor academic success in matriculation, retention, credits to degree, advising and graduation date.
  • In collaboration with other campus partners, oversee and promote expansion of co-curricular learning opportunities (e.g., international programs, study abroad, internships and experiential learning, student organizations, and undergraduate research).
  • Monitor and promote student success, leading innovative programs and supports to close equity gaps in student success and progression metrics.
  • Collaborate with other institutional divisions (e.g., Student Affairs) in ways that expand opportunities, advance student learning, and promote student success.
  • Monitor and promote student success in special student populations, including remedial and honors programming.
  • Promote innovative programs that support the closing of equity gaps in student success and progression metrics.
  • Oversee the recruitment, retention and graduation of students.

Strategic planning, acquiring, and allocating resources in fulfilling measurable outcomes, goals and accomplishments aligned with the university’s mission and core values.

  • Participate in enrollment management decisions.
  • Manage divisional staffing plans and allocations, budget development, incremental and base budget increases and reductions, as well as compensation considerations.
  • Prepare and submit accountability and accreditation information as necessary.
  • Manage cooperative, articulation and inter-institutional agreements relevant to academic programs.
  • Supervise requests for and disbursement of special funding opportunities made available by UW System (e.g., faculty and staff development, laboratory/classroom modernization, etc.), as well as institution-initiated application of special courses and technology fees.
  • Provide leadership to the Strategic Planning and Budget Committee (SPBC).

Planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating academic programs assuring academic integrity and quality.

  • Manage review of instructional and non-instructional programs that support the academic mission of the university.
  • Manage the array of academic programs, including the planning and approval of new programs while updating the existing program array to meet the University mission, strategic plan, and financial plan.

Overseeing the appointment, review, and professional development of faculty and staff.

  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, evaluation, and reappointment of faculty and academic staff.
  • Make recommendations to the Chancellor regarding faculty reappointment, promotion and tenure decisions of faculty as well as the renewal and promotion of academic instructional staff.
  • Work with the Faculty Senate, Academic Staff Assembly, and other appropriate groups in interpreting policy and resolving complaints, grievances, appeals and litigations relevant to State of Wisconsin statutes, UW System policies, and faculty and academic staff personnel rules.
  • Promote instructional improvement and scholarly/creative achievement among faculty and staff through on-campus programming and participation in UW System faculty and staff development opportunities.
  • Oversee awarding of sabbaticals, fellowships, faculty and academic staff development grants, and other intramural grant opportunities.
  • Promote faculty and staff excellence through management of campus-wide awards relevant to instruction, scholarly/creative achievement, service, and academic advising.
  • Oversee new staff orientation and development of administrative skills of faculty and staff where relevant (e.g., department chair development).
  • Review staff who are in direct reporting relationships to the Provost.
  • Supporting the institution’s diversity and inclusion initiatives

Representing the institution within the UW System and before agencies and constituencies outside the System.

  • Serve as the Chancellor’s representative at UW System meetings and external events as necessary.
  • Correspond with UW System and other external agencies as necessary in all responsibilities.

Required Qualifications:

The Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs will hold a terminal degree and have demonstrated experience as a teacher/scholar qualifying the candidate for tenure and appointment at the rank of full professor.

Applicants should also provide evidence of:

  • Academic and institutional leadership, including the ability to passionately promote a campus vision while managing hands-on details.
  • Experience with complex budgets, and the ability to (re)align resources to accomplish strategic outcomes.
  • Expanding the academic reach of an institution through innovative and effective programming and regional engagement and outreach.
  • A commitment to shared governance, academic assessment, and advancement in strategic initiatives.
  • A history of promoting excellence in teaching, scholarly/creative achievement and service, including experience with the tenure, promotion and professional development of faculty and academic staff.
  • Promoting and building upon the distinctive character of the institution’s student-centered learning environment by staying connected to students and working with Whitewater Student Government.
  • An understanding of the role of admissions, and recruitment and retention programs for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, attitudes, and collaborative tendencies in working effectively with constituencies on and off-campus.
  • An understanding of current and future challenges and opportunities facing regional comprehensive universities.

  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills.
