The Opportunity:

As a Mental Health Provider (counselor or psychologist) at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), you play a vital role in supporting student mental health and well-being. You provide culturally responsive, evidence-informed clinical services to a diverse student population with a wide range of presenting concerns, while contributing to a collaborative, student-centered counseling center within Cougar Health Services (CHS). CHS provides comprehensive, integrated healthcare to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on the WSU Pullman campus.

In this role, you deliver brief individual counseling, group therapy and workshops, initial consultations, and crisis assessment and intervention within a short-term model of care. You conduct clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning.

You contribute to CAPS' American Psychological Association-accredited training program by providing clinical supervision, training, and mentorship to practicum students, doctoral interns, and other trainees. You also engage in outreach, prevention programming, and consultation with faculty, staff, and students, supporting an inclusive campus climate and promoting student success and retention.

Working within an integrated and multidisciplinary care model, you collaborate with other CAPS clinicians, CHS medical providers, and campus partners to deliver coordinated mental health services. Success in this role requires strong generalist clinical skills, experience working with high-risk and diverse student populations, and the ability to balance direct clinical service, training responsibilities, and outreach in a dynamic university environment.

Summary of Duties:

Provide brief, focused individual counseling, group therapy and workshops, initial consultations, and crisis assessment and intervention to a diverse student population. Provide training and clinical supervision in a training program that includes practicum counselors and doctoral interns in an American Psychological Association-accredited doctoral internship. Engage in outreach presentations and activities. Provide professional consultation to WSU faculty, staff, and students regarding student behavior, mental health, and academic challenges in order to enhance an inclusive campus climate for student success.

Additional Information:

This is a full-Time (100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime exempt.

Monthly Salary:

Counselor: $5,631 - $7,748 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications
Psychologist: $6,095 - $8,059 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

Requirements for Counselor:

  • Positions require a master's degree in Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or related field and the ability to become independently licensed as a mental health professional in the State of Washington within one (1) year of employment.
  • Ability to become independently licensed as a mental health professional in the State of Washington within 1 year of hire.

Requirements for Psychologist:

  • A doctoral degree in Psychology, or equivalent including completion of pre-doctoral internship.
  • Eligibility for licensure as a Psychologist in Washington State within one year.

Requirements for both Counselor and Psychologist:

  • Excellent generalist clinical skills and experience providing brief, focused counseling services.
  • Experience working with high-risk individuals (e.g. suicide, eating disorders, substance abuse, PTSD) providing risk assessment and crisis appointments.
  • Experience and commitment to providing services to diverse student populations including, but not limited to, BIPOC students, LGBTQ+ students, undocumented, migrant, and immigrant students, international students, and veterans.
  • Experience providing clinical services to young adults in an outpatient setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications for Psychologist:

  • Specialized training and experience in one or more of the following: psychological assessment including LD/ADHA testing and writing integrated reports, or counseling and program development with students belonging to traditionally underserved groups.
  • Graduate of an APA-accredited doctoral program as well as an APA-accredited internship.
  • Experience and interest providing clinical supervision and training to graduate-level trainees.

Preferred Qualifications for Counselor and Psychologist:

  • One year of experience working in a university counseling center (experience obtained while earning degree is acceptable).
  • Experience facilitating psychotherapy groups and workshops.
  • Experience providing outreach and consultation on a university campus.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Bilingual or multilingual.
