Position title: Reader Salary range: See Table 18 for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $20.40 - $21.28 per hour. Anticipated start: Anticipated Start Date varies by term:
Fall Semester: 8/16/2025 - 12/31/2025
Spring Semester: 1/1/2026 - 5/15/2026
Academic Year: 8/16/2025 - 5/15/2026 Position duration: Duration through Academic Year 2025-2026

Position description

The Chemical and Materials Engineering department in the School of Engineering anticipates hiring multiple Readers for the below courses for Academic Year 2025-2026:

  • MSE 104: Engineering Living Systems
  • MSE 113: Materials Characterization
  • MSE 118: Introduction to Nanotechnology and Nanoscience
  • MSE 152: Materials Processing & Performance II: Materials Selection
  • MSE 162: 3D Printing Research and Development
  • MSE 194: Capstone Design
  • CHE 165: Plastic Pollution
  • Other courses as needed

The Reader will be responsible for grading homework, quizzes, exams as needed under the supervisor of the instructor. The position will require up to a maximum of 18 hours per week.

The University of California Readers are represented by the UAW-AFL-CIO. UAW-AFL-CIO

Qualifications

Basic qualifications
The Reader will have successfully completed the course or related course they are appointed to as a Reader with a grade of 'B' or higher and be in good standing at the University with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). Readers will usually be graduate students; but qualified undergraduate students may be employed, especially when graduate students are not available. Professional readers, not enrolled as students, may be employed to meet special needs, but only on an hourly basis.

  • Unofficial Transcript - Unofficial transcript confirming you have successfully completed and received a grade of 'B' or higher in the course or related course you are requesting to be a Reader for and are in good standing at the University with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA).
  • Authorization of Information Release
