Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £36,636 to £46,049 with potential progression once in post to £48,822

The University of Birmingham is seeking to appoint someone to a 21-month post associated with a research project called 'French-Language Print Publications in England to 1685' and funded by the Leverhulme Trust. It is led by Peter Auger at the School of English, Drama and Creative Studies at Birmingham, and co-led by Suzanne Jones (Cambridge).

Our core objective is to study French-language print publications in England to 1685, drawing on methods and insights from French, History, English and related disciplines. Specifically, we will (1) create a database of the corpus (2) analyze the corpus using quantitative and qualitative methods (3) transcribe several texts in full using computer-assisted methods (4) write a co-authored book that examines the variety of social situations in which French was being used, including translations of selected early modern French texts into English, and (5) work with the Huguenot Library’s collections, and promote engagement with them.

The project is designed to allow the Research Fellow to gain substantial research and publication experience by working with our team and wider scholarly network. Training, support and development opportunities will be offered in line with the Research Fellow's career stage and aspirations.

Person specification

• First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications, or close to completion
• High level analytical capability
• Strong reading comprehension of early modern French and ability to translate into English, and strong academic writing skills in English
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones, including willingness to use digital methods
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
• Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
• Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
• Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
