We are recruiting a Research Fellow for the Hydrogen Research Group currently consisting of 5 academics, 9 research fellows and 15 PhD students. The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary research team collaborating on the optimisation of metal hydrides and/or the design of solid-state hydrogen stores and compressors. The candidate must be awarded a PhD by an internationally recognised university in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Applied Physics, Chemistry or another relevant field.

This role will focus on multiple projects where the successful candidate will take a central role in managing and developing solid-state hydrogen technology, such as developing technology for the OceanRefuel project. This wide portfolio includes single and multiple stage metal hydride compressors, prototypes, system integration, next generation metal hydride materials, heat transfer media and novel hydrogen extraction methods.

The role-holder will work in a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and social scientists. The role-holder must have proven experience in:

  • Creative and imaginative solutions to meet technical objectives
  • Synthesizing and characterising of solid state hydrogen storage materials
  • Analysing and presenting data and presenting complex information effectively to a range of audiences
  • Collaborating in a diverse team
  • The development of facilities in the area of solid state hydrogen energy storage and compressor technologies
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Strong understanding of the properties of metal alloys / metal hydrides and hands-on laboratory experience and knowledge of experimental methods related to solid state hydrogen storage
  • Contributing to new understanding in the field of hydrogen or energy research
  • Characterising the thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrides

The Hydrogen Research Group values diversity. We believe listening to different perspectives can inform and improve our research. Diversity in our team helps us question theories and improve our understanding, lending itself to better solutions. Willingness to share your insights is crucial to achieving a vibrant and creative research environment, contributing to the shared aim of investigating hydrogen innovations to meet the global energy crisis.

As part of their career development the role holders will be exposed to many other exciting projects that the group is involved with. We support early career researchers (ECRs) through incubating new ideas, flexible working, and guidance for fellowships/grant applications, ensuring our ECRs can flourish. We support our researchers to present their work at international conferences. We also look for postdoctoral researchers who will provide community-support through either supervising junior researchers, STEM outreach and/or being engaged with an EDI interest group (e.g. Women in Research and the BME Staff Network).

There is a single post to start immediately. This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 18 months.
