CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR A RESEARCH GRANT UNDER THE PROJECT “ND4QTECH – NANODIAMONDS AND GRAPHENE FOR QUANTUM TECHNOLOGIES: AN INTEGRATED APPROACH FROM THE LABORATORY TO SOCIETY” (NORTE2030-FEDER-02708200), CO-FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION THROUGH THE EUROPEAN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND (ERDF), UNDER THE NORTH REGIONAL PROGRAM FOR 2021–2027 (NORTE2030), UNDER CALL FOR PROPOSALS NORTE2030-2024-84 (SACCCT—SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR THE CREATION OF SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE—INTEGRATED R&D&I PROJECTS), CURRENTLY UNDERWAY AT THE FACULTY OF LETTERS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO-BOLS-FLUP-26-12.
This call for applications is now open for the award of 1 (one) Research Fellowship (BI) to a student enrolled in a third-cycle program (doctoral degree) at the University of Porto, to conduct R&D activities as part of the project “ND4QTECH – Nanodiamonds and Graphene for Quantum Technologies: An Integrated Approach from the Laboratory to Society” (NORTE2030-FEDER-02708200), co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Northern Portugal Regional Program for 2021–2027 (NORTE2030), under call norte2030-2024-84 (SACCCT—Support System for the Creation of Scientific and Technological Knowledge—Integrated R&D&I Projects), under the following conditions:
1. Scientific Field
Philosophy or Social Sciences and Humanities.
2. Eligibility Requirements
All individuals of legal age who meet the following requirements, as verified by supporting documentation, are eligible to apply for this scholarship:
a) Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Philosophy or, alternatively, hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in another field of study, provided that the respective curriculum includes courses in the areas of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, Natural Sciences, or Physical Sciences.
b) Be enrolled in a Master’s degree programme in one of the aforementioned fields at the University of Porto (this requirement must be duly demonstrated at the time of recruitment).
1 If the academic degree was awarded by a foreign institution of higher education, it must be recognized by a Portuguese institution of higher education, in accordance with the provisions of Article 25 of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, which establishes the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas, awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and Article 4(2)(e) of Decree-Law No. 60/2018, of August 3; any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the hiring decision.
2 Proof of enrollment must be submitted by the date of the hiring decision.
3. Preferred Qualifications
- Scientific research experience in the project’s subject area, particularly regarding scientific frameworks and the graphical representation of knowledge;
- Experience in organizing scientific activities and in writing, communicating, and publishing scientific studies, as well as in preparing project reports;
- Proficient command of English (to be demonstrated through documentation and during the interview phase for candidates admitted to the competition who advance to the second phase, if applicable).
4. Work Plan
4.1. This work aligns with the objectives of the ND4QTECH project. In particular, the fellow will contribute to the pursuit of the following objectives:
- The production and dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge to society, the organization of scientific debates and discussions, and the preparation of educational and outreach materials related to graphical representations of knowledge;
- The development of possibilities for applying analogy as an epistemic tool in the construction of scientific models and explanations of quantum phenomena and advanced materials;
- Work related to: Reviewing the literature on the graphical representation of knowledge and the issue of analogy in scientific knowledge; Collaborating on the drafting or revision of scientific articles, presenting papers at scientific conferences, and preparing project reports; Support for the organization of meetings and events to disseminate the results obtained; Collaboration in other tasks supporting the management and execution of the project’s research and dissemination activities.
4.2. When an academic degree or diploma is awarded during the term of the fellowship contract, the fellowship may continue provided that the activities outlined in the work plan have not been completed and in accordance with the specific terms set forth in the call for applications and the contract, pursuant to Article 10(6) of the Regulations.
5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations
The selection process and the awarding of the scholarship are governed by the provisions set forth in the University of Porto’s Research Scholarship Regulations—approved by Regulation No. 582/2026, published in the Diário da República, 2nd Series, No. 96, of May 19; Legal Framework for the Recognition of Academic Degrees and Higher Education Diplomas Awarded by Foreign Higher Education Institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law No. 4/2015, dated January 7; and Statute of the Research Fellow (EBI), approved by Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, as currently amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of August 28; Regulation on Research Fellowships No. 950/2019, dated December 16, 2019, of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), I.P., in its current version, and other applicable regulations.
6. Place of Work
The research project will be carried out at the Institute of Philosophy of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Porto, under the academic supervision of Professors José Francisco Preto Meirinhos, Paula Cristina Moreira da Silva Pereira, and Domingos José Matos Sousa Faria.
7. Duration of the Fellowship
The research fellowship will last 12 months, scheduled to begin in October 2026, on a full-time basis, up to the end of the work plan’s implementation period or the funding period; under no circumstances may it exceed two years, given that the fellowship will be awarded to a student enrolled in a doctoral program, pursuant to Article 10(3) of the Regulations.
8. Amount of the Monthly Living Allowance
8.1. The monthly scholarship stipend amounts to €1,090.98, in accordance with Annex I of Regulation No. 582/2026, which sets the amount of research scholarships at the University of Porto for the current year.
8.2. Payment will be made by FLUP via bank transfer. In addition to this stipend, the scholarship recipient will be covered by personal accident insurance.
8.3. The scholarship recipient may enroll in Voluntary Social Security (valid for scholarship contracts of six months or longer); this is optional (not mandatory), and the reimbursement corresponds to the first bracket of the contribution base.
9. Selection Methods
9.1. The following are selection methods: curriculum evaluation (CE) with a weighting of 100%, or 85% when supplemented by an interview (INT), which will have a weighting of 15%; the interview will only take place when the Selection Committee determines that the CE does not sufficiently clarify, as intended, the candidates’ actual competencies or distinguish which candidate is best suited for the position and the duties to be performed. If an interview is conducted, it will be held with the three (3) candidates with the highest scores on the CV evaluation (AC).
9.2. Each member of the Selection Committee evaluates the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 20 points.
9.3. The criteria and weighting factors for the CV evaluation (AC) are as follows:
- Undergraduate GPA (0 to 2 points);
- Other academic qualifications: Ph.D., master’s degree, postgraduate studies (0 to 2 points);
- Scientific publications and activities, and proficiency in English: publications in scientific journals and presentations at conferences or workshops related to the project’s topic or activities, both national and international (0 to 6 points);
- Relevant scientific research experience in the project’s field (0 to 5 points);
- Activity plan (0 to 5 points).
9.4. The following are the criteria and weighting factors for the interview (ENT), should one be conducted:
- Specific knowledge and skills required to conduct research activities (0 to 8 points).
- Ability to express oneself and verbal fluency in Portuguese and English (0 to 8 points);
- Motivation to perform the role (0 to 4 points).
9.5. Candidates may request authorization from the chair of the Selection Committee to have their interview conducted via videoconference, providing justification for doing so.
9.6. Failure to attend the interview phase of the selection process is considered a withdrawal from the competition, and candidates will be excluded from the competition.
9.7. The Final Score (FS) will be calculated using the following formula: without an interview: FS = (100% AC); with an interview: (85% AC + ENT 15%).
9.8. This competitive selection process is intended exclusively to fill the vacancies listed; in the event that no candidate demonstrates the profile required to carry out the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Selection Committee reserves the right not to fill the position.

1st Alternate Member: Dr. José Francisco Preto Meirinhos, Full Professor, Faculty of Arts, University of Porto, and Director of the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Porto;
2nd Alternate Member: Dr. Vera Lúcia Silva Rodrigues, Assistant Researcher at the Institute of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, University of Porto.
11. Submission Format and Deadline
11.1. Applications must be submitted by September 1, 2026 (11:59 p.m. – Lisbon).

11.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving compliance with the conditions set forth in this Notice, namely:
- Curriculum vitae;
- A cover letter that must include a statement of motivation, indicating availability to begin the work plan;
- A copy of the certificate(s) for the required qualifications and recognition of the degree if it was obtained from a foreign higher education institution (this recognition may be submitted by the time of hiring);
- Work plan for the duration of the fellowship, including proposals for the development of the project for which the call for applications is open;
- Proof of enrolment in a master’s degree programme, to be provided by the time of hiring;
- Declaration of eligibility (attached).
11.4. Applicants may also submit any other documents they deem relevant to the evaluation of their qualifications.
11.5. Failure to meet the deadline for submitting the application, or failure to submit—or late submission of—the documents referred to in subparagraphs (a) through (c) of paragraph 11.3, will result in the exclusion of the application.
11.6. The documents mentioned in paragraph 11.3 should preferably be submitted in a non-editable format.
11.7. The Selection Committee may, whenever it deems necessary, request that applicants submit supplementary documentation regarding the facts mentioned in the submitted resume, setting a deadline for this purpose, under the following terms:
- the aforementioned documentation is not intended for the submission of information not referenced in the resume, nor for the inclusion of missing documents required by this Notice;
- all applicants are notified that supplementary documentation has been requested.
12. False statements
False statements made by applicants will be punished in accordance with the law.
13. Method of Publication/Notification of Results
13.1. All notifications under this procedure will be sent by email through the APPLY platform.
13.2. Notifications are sent by email, in accordance with Articles 112(1)(c) and 113(5) of the CPA.
13.3. Pursuant to the provisions of Article 121 et seq. of the CPA, after being notified, candidates have 10 business days to submit a written response.
14. Reserve List
A reserve list will be drawn up based on the final ranking list, which may be used in the event that the candidate ranked first withdraws. The faculty’s highest authority reserves the right to call upon the next candidate, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 months from the date of approval of the final ranking list.
