Research Scientist Associate IV, Center for Archaeological Research (CAR)
Job Summary
The Research Scientist Associate IV works to assist in the planning and direction of a unit engaged in research and to perform advanced duties related to archaeological investigations requiring special qualifications or attainments with a wide latitude for independent action and decision.
This is a grant-funded position dependent on availability of funds and/or departmental need.
Core Responsibilities
- Serve as archaeological research project archaeologist, supervising fieldwork, lab analysis, and report production.
- Responsible for assisting with the direction of a research program and for performing complex or unusual research assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures.
- Assists in the development and design of plans for research experiments and projects.
- Prepares specifications and develops techniques. Prepares project proposals and field work.
- Plans, schedules, and coordinates detailed phases of research projects including devising new approaches to problems encountered.
- Oversees the supervision and training of student employees, interns, and volunteers; oversees staff using established procedures; and leads research teams in advanced multi-year research activities.
- Assists key members of research staff in solving specific problems encountered in project.
- Assumes responsibility for acceptance or rejection of results achieved.
- Responsible for evaluation, selection, and application of scientific techniques used in routine research.
- Performs professional research to include performing field work; gathering and analyzing data and samples and setting up/operating equipment.
- Performs specified phases of research projects to include making and recording observations and measurements; compiles data; processes paperwork; maintain lab records; writes technical reports; and assists in the writing and editing process of grants and project scope of works.
- Operates laboratory equipment; contributes to laboratory maintenance.
- Performs calculations to complete research test results; collates data; performs statistical analysis of lab results and maintain notes and log or computer database; performs basic procedures for computer assisted data analysis.
- Collects and organizes information for various reports.
- Performs photography.
- Performs library research.
- Participates in training sessions and workshops.
- Promotes a safety environment by working in a safe manner; immediately reporting unsafe situations following University safety plans/procedures/protocols; and participating in appropriate safety training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Master's Degree from an accredited institution in the field of assignment. Three years of related research experience including assisting in research design, project design, designing fieldwork, leading field crews, laboratory analysis, and research report production. This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UTSA and its infrastructure.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of federal and state regulations and guidelines pertaining to archaeological investigations. Knowledge of statistical data collection, editing, validation, and analysis techniques. Ability to develop and implement clinical research monitoring plans and standard operating procedures. Ability to develop technical reports and manuscripts. Ability to make evaluative judgments. Ability to communicate and interact competently and professionally at all levels within a broad, complex research environment. Ability to establish data collection and management guidelines. Ability to provide technical advice, guidance, and support to professional staff in area of specialty. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. Demonstrates good time management and organizational skills. Strong communication skills for writing papers, reports. MS Office experience in Word, Excel, Outlook; Experience using GPS units and ArcGIS.
Working Conditions
Laboratory/field environment. Exposure to potential occupational hazards. Exposure to combustible materials. May require travel off-campus and extended overnight stays. Position will require driving a UTSA vehicle. Frequent exertion in outside weather conditions consistent with archaeological research.
Physical Demands
Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations. Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Repetitive motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Reaching overhead, at or below shoulder level. Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; using measurement devices.
This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
