"Senior Lab Technician"

Position Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Lab Technician for the Waksman Inst of Microbiology department. Under general guidance and direction, provides professional level research support in the area of C. elegans genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry in the Singson Lab.

• Conducts research on the project, the position requires some laboratory maintenance, such as maintaining lab strains and preparing media.
• Reports directly to the Principal Investigator.
• Provides professional level laboratory technical support duties involving the application of scientific research methods and techniques.
• Performs a wide variety of scientific assays and tests involving the repetitive application of research methods and techniques requiring proficiency and a high degree of manipulative skill in all required methods.
• Propagates non-animal specimens and cell cultures, conducts breeding of small animals, and performs standard small animal procedures.
• Performs technical support research, such as multistage purifications and assays, independently, within given framework or established methods and requiring only limited responsibility for identification and matching to standardized expected result categories.
• Selects next steps based on initial result categories and, on own initiative, carries tasks through to completion without further instructions.
• Records and notifies supervisor of deviations from applications of procedures, protocols, or techniques.
• Determines various characteristics of materials and subjects used in laboratory experiments, prepares tissues, chemicals, living subjects, etc. for testing with responsibility for selecting appropriate techniques.
• Prepares materials, media, substances, mixtures, solutions, and reagents and alters substances within defined parameters to correct deviations.
• Records results of tests and experiments and prepares detailed graphs, tables, and reports of procedures, observations, reactions, dosages, and reaction time.
• Measures and observes refined phenomena in experiments, with responsibility for notifying supervisor of deviations from projected or expected results.
• Requisitions, distributes, cleans, cares for, and maintains laboratory items such as tools, equipment, supplies, chemicals, specimens, drawings, charts, slides, and models.
• May be responsible for multiple laboratory areas or for a large laboratory with multiple personnel and functions.
• Cleans small animals, cages, and laboratory area.
• Observes and evaluates animals for normative behavior or signs of disease or illness.
• Determines if food should be accepted from vendor.
• Feeds prescribed maintenance diet to experimental animals in accordance with established procedures and schedules.
• Adds nutritive supplements as prescribed.
• Maintains, assembles, adjusts, and repairs laboratory equipment as required.
• Disposes of laboratory waste in accordance with established sanitary and safety procedures.
• Works with hazardous materials associated with animal husbandry and sanitation and/or experimental procedures (carcinogens, chemicals, infectious agents, etc.).
• Guides and instructs other laboratory employees or users as required.
• Delivers specimens, materials, and equipment to and from facilities.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

A bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline. A combination of two years college-level science curriculum plus two years relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests may be substituted for the degree. An additional equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience in the above combination.
