SCA Media Coordinator/Art Museum Assistant Curator

The SCA Media Coordinator/Art Museum Assistant Curator is responsible for multiple tasks while equally focusing on two main areas: 1) Marketing and media coordinator for the School of Communication and the Arts, and 2) The Liberty Art Museum operations and events.

The School of Communication and the Arts (SCA) Media Coordinator reports to the school’s Dean and is a liaison between all departments that encompass SCA and LU Marketing. This role oversees and directs marketing materials for the school, plans photoshoots, manages social media accounts, initiates website updates, compiles weekly newsletters, and performs other related media and marketing assignments as directed.

The Art Museum Assistant Curator reports to the Chair of the Studio and Digital Arts (SADA) department, organizing and overseeing approximately ten departmental events per academic year, some of which host up to 500 attendees. Events include SADA’s Marketplace, art exhibitions for students and featured professional artists, juried art competitions, graduate-level art shows, and department events. This position designs (or coordinates the design of) advertising materials including the printing, posting, and digital marketing for events. The role manages the Art Museum’s budget and day-to-day operations working closely with the department’s Administrative Assistant/Art Museum Assistant and student workers to coordinate projects and initiatives throughout the year.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Media Marketing: As the printed and digital face of the School of Communication and the Arts (SCA), this role requires 1) artistic and creative competencies in graphic design, photography/photoshoots, and layout for visual messaging, 2) listening, writing, research, communication, and collaboration skills for content management, 3) organization and strategic planning, 4) time management, and 5) analytical thinking.
  • Social Media/Website Content: This role manages several social media platforms for SCA that involve creating content calendars, researching information, and producing content, as well as engaging with followers by answering messages and replying to comments. Website content management requires engaging with LU’s web team to update information, images, formatting, and layout.
  • Event Planning: As the event planner for Liberty’s Art Museum and photoshoot manager, this role organizes, coordinates, and launches multiple events that require high levels of planning, creativity, attention to detail, organization, facilitation, adaptability, budgeting, and teamwork.
  • Student Workers: Work with the Administrative Assistant/Art Museum Assistant to qualify and interview graphic design student workers. Facilitate and manage assigned projects to graphic design student workers (with the Dean’s office and department).
  • Art Museum Curation and Operations: Manage the day-to-day operations within the Art Museum that include budget management, staffing, scheduling, hanging and displaying art, and maintaining the organization and inventory of the permanent collection.
  • Recruitment Events: Assist with Liberty recruiting initiatives that include College for a Weekend (CFAW) and Experience LU events.
  • ARTS 382 and 582 Art Museum Fundamentals: Manage the docent students within the course and assist in class as needed.
  • Remain abreast with a working knowledge of all departments within the School of Communication & the Arts (SCA). Stay current with events, accomplishments, and Provost initiatives.
  • Work effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This staff member will oversee the graphic design workflow of multiple student workers and manage docent hours of ARTS 382 and 582 classes. This position also provides internship, practicum, and/or CSER opportunities for students to manage Art Museum initiatives and projects.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field.
  • 1-2 years of experience in event planning and project management.
  • Candidate must have a demonstrated ability to learn and efficiently use complex computing applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Suite, social media platforms, Asist, and Banner systems.
  • Exceptional etiquette, writing proficiency, natural organizer, multi-tasking, problem-solving skills, and adaptability to a changing environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of budgeting experience.
  • MFA students are encouraged to apply.

ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL TO THE FUNCTION OF THE JOB

Communication and Comprehension

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business and community customers and associates.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.

Problem Solving

Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.

Physical and Sensory Abilities

  • Occasionally required to travel to local and campus locations.
  • Frequently required to sit for extended periods to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel, or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled office setting. It is well-lighted, and the noise level is moderate.

Driving Requirements

Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
