Position Summary

The Senior Case Manager will work with a fair amount of autonomy to provide strategies, interventions, and advocacy related to case management services for students with a range of disabilities. This position is integral to furthering accessibility and inclusion for students with disabilities and works closely with faculty and University partners to remove barriers to learning.

This is a six-month temporary position, with an anticipated start date of November 1, 2025. It is an essential on-site role that requires occasional evening and weekend hours during times of peak academic operational volume.

Responsibilities

Case Management (75%)

  • Manages academic accommodations as defined by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the American with Disabilities Act for a large caseload of students registered with Disability Services.
  • Develops comprehensive disability case management strategies and ensures implementation of reasonable accommodation for students with significant disabilities, who require intensive assistance and complex accommodations; evaluates and prioritizes case management demands based on individual student needs; supports students through a variety of interventions, referrals, advocacy, and follow-up services.
  • Reviews highly sensitive and confidential disability documentation to determine disability status and need for accommodations.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors accommodation plans with students and faculty.
  • Provides 1:1 consultation with students; counsels students on academic accommodations, departmental policies and procedures, and University policies.
  • Educates students on intervention compensatory strategies such as study skills, time and organization management, and self-advocacy.
  • Advises students on issues such as disclosure, accommodation concerns, disability management, reasonability, rights and responsibilities, and the grievance processes.
  • Thoroughly document meeting notes and maintains timely and accurate electronic student records, including records of activities, disability-related documentation and communications.
  • Provides consultation relevant to disability issues and serves as a liaison to University departments and divisions to facilitate services for students with disabilities.
  • Interface regularly with faculty and University administrators, including Morningside schools, Columbia Health, Public Safety, Dining, and Libraries on disability issues. Makes appropriate referrals to university support services and off-campus professionals as needed.
  • Responsible for ensuring accommodations letters are issued according to the departmental procedures.
  • Provides guidance, educational screenings, and possible referrals for non-identified students who inquire about self-perceived disabilities.
  • Participates in case management meetings to discuss, review, and determine appropriate case management strategies for complex and ongoing cases.

Compliance/Awareness/Outreach (15%)

  • Maintains professional expertise in matters pertaining to federal and state regulations and policies affecting persons with disabilities, including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act, including ADA standards and regulations pertinent to students with disabilities in higher education.
  • Performs outreach to students, faculty, and staff and represents Disability Services at orientation and other events.
  • Provides ongoing technical assistance to faculty, class deans, and other advisors regarding the University's obligations to students with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Other (5%)

  • Provides cross-functional and other auxiliary accommodation services such as assisting with the administration of exam accommodations during peak operational volume, coordinates course-specific accommodations, note-taking, and classroom accommodations.
  • Maintains and develops a network of contacts and actively seeks out and participates in professional development activities to ensure a continual flow of current and emerging information in disability service.
  • May oversee and provide guidance to assigned staff.

Performs other responsibilities as assigned (5%)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, or a closely related field.
  • Requires a minimum of 4 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, ADA, and state regulations as they relate to the provision of services to students with disability.
  • Expertise in evaluating disability documentation and determining eligibility for services and accommodations
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of working with students of diverse backgrounds, academic performance, and disabilities, experience with both traditional and non-traditional students
  • Ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, and staff from a broad range of programs and disciplines.
  • Must demonstrate ability to exercise astute independent judgment and discretion on sensitive issues.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive university data.
  • Must be able to handle a high-volume workload; manage concurrent demands and multiple stakeholders while working as part of a team
  • Demonstrates ability to take initiative, use critical thinking, and exercise astute independent judgment.
  • Position requires strong computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in the provision of services for students with disabilities in a college/university setting.

*The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.*
