Are you a skilled investigator with a passion for fairness, procedural integrity, and student wellbeing? Macquarie University is seeking a Senior Misconduct Investigator to join the Complaints, Appeals and Misconduct (CAM) team within the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Dean of Students) portfolio.

This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in safeguarding academic integrity and ensuring that misconduct matters are handled with the highest standards of professionalism, empathy, and rigour.

This is a campus-based (on-site), student-facing role that offers the chance to make a real and meaningful impact on the University community. If you thrive in complex, sensitive environments and are committed to upholding the principles of natural justice and procedural fairness, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

In this role, you will lead investigations into serious student academic integrity and other misconduct matters, working collaboratively with students, staff, and stakeholders across the University. You will contribute to continuous improvement of policies and processes that underpin student conduct, ensuring they are people-centred, culturally appropriate, and aligned with best practice in the higher education sector.

Reporting to the Director, Student Integrity and Compliance, the Senior Misconduct Investigator is responsible for investigating cases of serious student academic integrity breaches and other misconduct matters. Key responsibilities include:

  • Investigation and Case Management: Gathering evidence, interviewing students and staff, preparing comprehensive case reports, and managing records within the student misconduct management system.
  • Sensitive Case Handling: Managing complex and sensitive cases with discretion, empathy, and professionalism, maintaining clear communication of expectations and adherence to timelines.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Working closely with internal stakeholders across faculties and offices and establishing partnerships with relevant external organisations. Providing expert advice on serious student academic integrity and misconduct issues.
  • Quality Assurance and Compliance: Ensuring all investigations align with higher education best practice, regulatory standards, and University policy, and that processes are people-centred, culturally appropriate, and accessible.
  • Reporting: Preparing evidence-based reports on misconduct matters and contributing to continuous improvement reporting for the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Dean of Students).
  • Policy Development: Contributing to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of policies and processes that uphold student conduct and integrity across the University.

About Us

The Complaints, Appeals and Misconduct (CAM) team sits within the Student Integrity and Compliance team under the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Dean of Students) portfolio, which reports to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). The team is responsible for responding to complaints from students, staff, and the public, coordinating student appeals, and investigating student conduct matters.

About You

You are an experienced investigator with a strong ethical compass, excellent judgement, and the ability to navigate complex and sensitive matters with care. You are a clear communicator who builds trust with diverse stakeholders and can balance empathy with rigour. You bring a deep understanding of procedural fairness and are passionate about contributing to a fair, safe, and inclusive university community.

Selection Criteria:

  • A relevant tertiary degree and/or extensive relevant experience in investigations.
  • Extensive experience in leading misconduct investigations, preferably in a higher education setting, including evidence collection, interviewing, and report preparation.
  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated ability in managing, analysing, and optimising data for misconduct investigations, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Proven ability in writing detailed investigation and case management reports.
  • Demonstrated application of procedural fairness principles when investigating or determining the outcome of misconduct matters.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with key stakeholders, manage conflict, and influence outcomes.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise competing demands and manage sensitive matters under pressure.

Desirable: Experience in the Australian tertiary education sector, knowledge of the Australian higher education system, and awareness of existing and emerging serious student academic integrity and misconduct matters alongside experience investigating such matters.
