Your opportunity

Southern Cross University is on an ambitious journey to redefine how technology empowers learning, research and community impact. We’re building a future-ready technology organisation - modern, secure, adaptable and driven by innovation. Our teams are embracing emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to deliver smarter, more seamless services and to create meaningful benefits for students, staff and the wider community.

We’re looking for exceptional IT professionals to help us make this vision a reality. Within Technology Services, our five dynamic work units: Data, Architecture & Integration; Cyber Resilience; Digital Delivery & Innovation; Technology Platforms; and Operations & Services - collaborate to deliver cutting-edge solutions and high-impact projects across the University.

We’re now seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to design, implement, and support scalable, secure, and resilient platform services that underpin all University ICT operations. Reporting to the Manager, Platform Services (Technology Platforms), this hands-on role focuses on cloud, automation, monitoring, backup and archiving, and modern platform engineering practices.

You will make an impact by:

  • Designing and maintaining enterprise platform services across Microsoft platforms, Windows/Linux, virtual machines, backup & archiving, and Azure cloud environments
  • Enhancing backup and archiving capabilities, including Azure-based solutions, ensuring reliability, compliance, and audit readiness
  • Leading improvements to monitoring, alerting, and reporting capabilities, such as Grafana, delivering meaningful visibility of platform performance and availability
  • Driving automation and infrastructure-as-code practices using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, GitHub, and scripting, such as Python
  • Providing Tier 3+ technical expertise, leading complex incident resolution, and contributing to continuous improvement and platform modernisation initiatives

What you will bring

You’re a hands-on, forward thinking Platform Engineer with strong cloud and systems expertise, passionate about automation, modernisation, and building secure, scalable, and resilient platform services that are ready for the future.

To succeed in this role, you will also need:

  • An undergraduate qualification in Information Technology and/or ideally 4+ years of experience in Platform, Systems, or Cloud Engineering roles
  • Strong experience across Microsoft infrastructure, Windows, and or Linux server administration, virtualisation, and backup & archiving solutions. Azure Backup experience highly desirable
  • Proven capability in monitoring, visualization, and reporting tools, and infrastructure automation using Terraform, Ansible, GitHub, and scripting. Experience with Microsoft Purview is desirable
  • Excellent problem solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills, with a collaborative approach and commitment to equity, diversity and workplace safety.
