Overview
All SJD Environmental Law candidates at Pace University must spend at least one year in residence at Pace University, not counting the year they spend doing preliminary work, if applicable. During this year all SJD Candidates must be enrolled in the research seminar.
The research seminar is mandatory for all SJD Candidates in the Prospectus stage. The seminar will cover topics of plagiarism, citation form, and research methodologies. Visit the programme website for more information
Dissertation
The Dissertation presented at the end of the SJD is the product of extensive legal research, offers original ideas and should be an important contribution to the field of environmental legal scholarship. It documents the Candidate’s ability 1) to make substantive contributions to answering a major intellectual question and 2) to communicate research results with professional competence.
Programme Structure
The SJD structure is as follows:
- Year 1: preliminary coursework
- Year 2: research seminar, research and development of Prospectus, and, when appropriate, commence drafting Dissertation
- Year 3: continuation of research, writing Dissertation and defense

General requirements
- From all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended. If your transcript is not in English, please submit a translated version.
- Your personal statement must be no more than 500 words and written in English. It must be entirely your own work.
- Please submit at least two letters of recommendation. These letters should be written by persons who know you well enough to evaluate your academic or professional background and your capacity for graduate law study.
- Please submit a short sample of your best legal writing. For example, you might submit a legal brief or memorandum from your professional practice, or an academic paper from your previous law studies.
- This document should be a chronological summary of your academic and professional experience.
- Applicants for the SJD programme must submit a research proposal, explaining the subject they intend to research while at Haub Law.
