Sound and Lighting Supervisor
The Lighting and Sound Supervisor is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of all lighting and sound aspects for the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance, primarily focused on Theatre & Dance Program productions and associated spaces. This includes overseeing the lighting and sound labs/shop/storage areas during specified hours as determined by the University and the Department. These hours are currently specified as Monday-Friday 9:00 AM-6:00 PM, with the understanding that production needs will require evening and weekend work. Additionally, the supervisor will assist with and oversee recording and streaming select ensembles in the music program. Moreover, the position will supervise students in a lab setting within theatre productions, focusing on lighting and sound technologies and practices. The Supervisor will collaborate with the Lighting and Sound Designer, faculty, guest directors, and students to ensure lighting and sound designs are realized safely, efficiently, and to specifications. Key responsibilities include setting up and preparing work areas and performance spaces for lighting and sound; managing the load-in, hang, focus, programming, and strike of lighting and sound for all productions; attending and supporting technical rehearsals and performances as assigned; assigning duties to student workers and student assistants; establishing and prioritizing work schedules to meet production deadlines; checking and approving student work; and ensuring that all lighting and sound equipment, shops, and performance spaces are maintained in a safe, clean, and organized manner.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Related to Position
- Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment and knowledge of relevant safety standards.
- Proficiency in theatrical sound equipment, including microphones (wired and wireless), mixing consoles (analog and digital), amplifiers, speakers, playback systems, and intercom systems.
- Comprehensive understanding of theatrical lighting equipment, including conventional fixtures, intelligent lighting, dimming systems, and control consoles (ETC Eos family).
- Strong understanding of electrical theory, safe electrical practices, and theatrical rigging principles as they apply to lighting and sound.
- Ability to read and interpret lighting plots, speaker plots, system diagrams, and other production drawings.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor, and guide students with varying levels of experience in a hands-on, lab-based learning environment.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and guest artists.
- Familiarity with relevant software for lighting design (Vectorworks, Lightwright) and sound design/editing (QLab, Pro Tools, Reaper).
- Ability to manage inventory, maintenance, and repair of lighting and sound equipment.
Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required
Education:
- High school graduate or equivalent education and experience that equates to a high school diploma
Experience:
- Previous technical theatrical sound and lighting experience
- Previous experience hanging and focusing sound/lighting equipment and basic rigging
Additional Consideration(s)
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher; or equivalent with experience and/or training that equates to the degree requirement.
Experience:
- Previous technical theatrical sound/lighting experience in an educational setting.
- Previous experience hanging and focusing sound/lighting equipment and basic rigging.
- Previous related supervisory experience.
- Previous experience using counter weight systems and basic rigging.
- Previous experience drafting and reading sound/lighting CAD drawings.
