Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The NC New Teacher Support Program (NC NTSP) seeks to improve the knowledge and ability of beginning teachers by developing and executing intensive beginning teacher institutes, instructional coaching and support services, and professional development for beginning teachers. Under the direction of the UNC General Administration and in collaboration with institutions of higher education and Local Education Agencies, the NC New Teacher Support Program provides research-based induction services delivered by master teachers and instructional coaches during a beginning teacher's first, second, and third years of their career and manages and develops new teachers to envision and achieve results that ensure short and long term success of their students. A primary goal of this NC NTSP Instructional Coach is to support beginning Special Education teachers who are pursuing Residency Licensure through an innovative model of coaching, professional development, and advising designed to prepare and retain resilient, effective Special Education teachers in the region.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position:

The NC NTSP Instructional Coach affiliated with the Watson College of Education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington will manage a cohort of special education teachers assigned in one or more schools in two school districts in the southeast region and will be assigned to these locations as needed. 2026-2027 support needs reside in New Hanover County Schools and Brunswick County Schools.

The Instructional Coach will work with beginning Special Education teachers in Special Education: General Curriculum and Special Education: Adapted Curriculum settings. With a primary focus on teacher success and resilience, the Instructional Coach will support the beginning special education teachers in establishing effective classroom routines and instructional practices that maximize learning for students with disabilities. Instructional Coach will support the beginning special education teacher in: (a) instructional planning and implementation, (b) leadership of classroom staff such as paraprofessionals, and student assessment procedures that inform instructional decisions and IEP team decisions, (d) collaboration with parents and other professionals, and (e) establishing professional membership as an important stakeholder in the school community. Instructional Coaches will also play an integral role in developing the broader support program, working closely with NC NTSP staff, Watson College of Education Special Education Program Faculty, school and district leadership, UNC System Schools of Education, and others to ensure that the web of support is effective for new teachers.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Five years of teaching experience, including a minimum of three years experience teaching learners with disabilities
  • A strong record of measurable results as a classroom teacher
  • A strong record of previous coaching and/or mentoring experience and leading adult professional development (e.g. as a workshop facilitator, mentor teacher, etc.)
  • Knowledge of North Carolina's educational systems, including a full understanding of PreK-12 education, and the role of NC's institutions of higher education in teacher preparation
  • Knowledge of learners with disabilities and special education systems in NC, including Special Education: General Curriculum and Special Education: Adapted Curriculum settings

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Master's degree in Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a related field
  • Demonstrated leadership while working in a public school/and or higher education setting
  • Experience and direct knowledge of edTPA rubrics and effective models of teacher preparation from pre-service through induction
  • Strong written and oral communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of licensure exams in special education in NC
  • Understanding of research, assessment, and evaluation strategies for educational programs
  • Demonstrated talent and innovation as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, beginning teacher mentor and/or school/district leader
  • Strong people and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of pedagogy and adult learning theory; knowledge of federal and state education policies
  • Demonstrated organizational and data management skills
  • Passion for teaching and for education and a belief that this program, the Instructional Coaches, the beginning teachers, and the students will be highly successful
