Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Director of Athletics, provide information and services to internal and external communities regarding CLU's 24 NCAA Division III intercollegiate sports; to be primary content creator for, and curator of, the Athletics website; archive sports statistics; promote a positive image of the University's sports programs; work closely with SCIAC, NCAA, sports reporters, coaches, student-athletes and staff; provide sports news for media and internal publications.
Representative Duties:
- Provide information (including photos) and services to the campus community, Hall of Fame committee, external communities, SCIAC, NCAA and media regarding the University's athletic teams; provide information to local, regional and national agencies as required. E
- Manage and create the content of www.CLUsports.com (Athletics website), with releases, previews and recaps, photos/videos, game results, rosters, coach and student-athlete bios, statistics and schedules; and work collaboratively with Web Communications to improve the site regularly and to ensure content is current and accurate. E
- Supply original content and graphics, manage and monitor all Social Media outlets used by the department. E
- Promotion of upcoming athletic events. E
- Nominate coaches and student-athletes for various athletic and academic-related awards, conference, regionally and nationally. E
- Cultivate professional relationships with sports reporters and editors to ensure substantial coverage of student athletes and sports-related news. E
- Prepare publications including game programs, posters, brochures, and schedule cards for each sport. E
- Assist in producing necessary content for the video board for football and soccer to include contest title slides and Senior Day slides. E
- Conduct interviews with coaches, student-athletes, administrators and others for publications and to promote the University's 24 NCAA athletics programs. This includes post-game press conferences. E
- Maintain up-to-date historical documents and statistical archives for Sports Information. E
- Oversee and manage live streaming of home contests. E
- Coordinate Live Stats and promote other Live feeds (video, audio) via schedule pages; hire students and freelancers as needed for game coverage, within budget; coordinate photography coverage of home sporting events. E
- Manage events by scheduling statistics crews for all home athletic events, supervising the press box, and assisting the media with statistics, highlights and requested information. E
- Supervise SID Graduate Assistant as well as students and interns; assign and review all work for the Sports Information Office. E
- Manage SID budget, including student employment funds. E
- Assist with the publication of a monthly electronic newsletter. E
- Work collaboratively with Director of Athletics, student-athletes, coaches and administrators to actively promote Cal Lutheran intercollegiate athletics. E
- Work collaboratively with SIDs and coaches of opponent teams to gather and exchange information. E
- Serve on Editorial Board of CLU Magazine and as the primary sports writer providing story ideas, copy and photos for the magazine. E
- Serve as a liaison between Athletics and other campus departments concerning sports information requests. E
- Represent Cal Lutheran at SCIAC and NCAA Division III meetings pertaining to sports information, postseason competition, and other conference related matters. E
- Coordinate and manage the planning and implementation of Fall, Winter and Spring sport Media Days. E
- Perform other duties as assigned
E=Essential Duties
Knowledge Of:
- All 24 NCAA Division III sports in which CLU student-athletes compete
- Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
- Required statistical programs (NCAA LiveStats, PrestoStats)
- Rules/statistics related to both the SCIAC and NCAA
- Solid writing and photography techniques with extreme attention to detail
- Desktop publishing programs (Adobe Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, etc.) and social media.
- Web and electronic filing techniques
- Social media content development and management
Ability To:
- Use strong oral and written communication skills effectively on deadline
- Post and edit web content in the office and remotely
- Provide news releases, statistics, records, feature stories and publications for numerous sports.
- Understand and incorporate university branding and printing policies
- Multitask while working on deadline in variety of environments
- Work with a variety of personalities; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Develop interesting, innovative and creative materials related to University sports.
- Function well on both Mac and PC platforms
- Hire, train and schedule/coordinate student-workers/interns to perform functions in the sports information office and at sporting events
- Use a digital camera and video recording equipment including a flip cam device
- Meet deadlines on a constant basis and manage time efficiently
- Must have the ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends. Since the position involves highly irregular hours, the SID will have flexibility in determining normal and consistent work hours. A weekly schedule of office hours, games, and other activities should be made available to the Director of Athletics
- Conduct business with the highest ethical standards
Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, Film Studies, Sports Management or related field and two years of experience in sports information with NCAA LiveStats and PrestoStats experience. Student/intern/graduate experience is applicable.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in NCAA Division III sports information
Writing and distributing press releases in the associated press format
Licenses and Other Requirements:
Valid California driver's license
Physical Abilities:
Detect to understand appropriate written correspondence; operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer; communicate to exchange information in person, in writing, on the telephone and by email; stationary position for extended periods of time; move or transport light objects; position self to store and/or retrieve files
Working Environment:
Working environment includes both indoors and outdoors; exposure to various weather conditions, including temperature extremes; subject to vehicle operation to conduct work; travel is required; frequent weekend and evening hours is required; Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
