Staff Interpreter
Job Summary
*This position is on a 10/12 Pay Plan, which means working 10 months per year, yet having salary paid out over 12 months. Salary is reflective of a 0.8 FTE.*
The Accessible Education Center (AEC) is seeking a skilled and dedicated Staff Interpreter to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Reporting to the Director of the Accessible Education Center, this position provides high-quality interpreting and transliterating services across a variety of academic settings, including complex and specialized coursework.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide professional American Sign Language (ASL) and voice interpreting services in undergraduate, graduate, and specialized classes
- Adapt interpreting to technical and discipline-specific subject matter
- Maintain a flexible schedule to meet student needs
- Assist with scheduling interpreters and Real-time Captioners
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Possess highly developed skills in American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication modes pertaining to the Deaf & Hard of Hearing population
- Knowledge of complex subject matter that provides fluent, accurate, and specific translation while performing as an educational Interpreter
- Working knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of professional conduct
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, adhere to RID Code of Conduct, and appropriately handle sensitive communications with students, employees and external agencies
- Ability to maintain RID Certification
- Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
- Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
- Ability to maintain RID Certification as per classification requirement
- Possess strong organizational skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf culture and working knowledge of the Deaf Community
- Ability to advocate effectively for students with disabilities working with university personnel
- Excellent customer service and public relations skills with strong oral and sign language communication skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from a four-year (4) college or university may be essential to provide interpreting services at a level required for the position assignments
- Certificate of completion of an accredited Interpreter Preparation Program and National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification is required (e.g., CI/CT or NAD or NIC)
- Two (2) years of relevant documented interpreting experience in a variety of settings usually are needed to perform at the level required for position assignments
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited Interpreter Preparation Program as well as a Bachelor of Arts Degree
- A wide acquaintance with academic higher education through attendance at a post-secondary educational institution may be essential to fully comprehend and accurately interpret the concepts, language, and vocabulary used in the assigned instructional, academic and/or administrative situations
Compensation
Classification: Interpreter II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,800/month - $7,200/month (0.8 FTE)
CSU Salary Range: $4,658/month - $10,120/month
