Student News Media Advisor

Saint Michael's College is seeking a talented Media Advisor to mentor students in the production of the Saint Michael’s College student news media. This position is part-time. It involves mentoring student editors and reporters as well as conducting the weekly media and publication meeting. This is an opportunity to be involved in our shift to digitally focused news media and campus-wide student involvement.

Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and guide students in all aspects of journalism production including story development, law and ethics, writing, editing, photography, video production, layout and design in print and online
  • Ensure the news publication meets educational standards of the college and professional journalism ethical guidelines.
  • Teach a 1-credit journalism production class that trains student editors and media producers.
  • Collaborate with student editorial staff, faculty, IT support staff and school administrators when needed.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree and professional experience in journalism, media, communications, or a related field. Teaching experience is preferred.

Compensation:

$5,800 (equivalent to one full, 4-credit course, per semester). Note: we are currently hiring for the fall semester, but we are ideally looking for a candidate who is interested in forging a long-term relationship with student editors and in collaborating to build and develop news media at Saint Michael’s College over the long-term.

Our Mission:

It is the mission of Saint Michael’s College to contribute through higher education to the enhancement of the human person and to the advancement of human culture in the light of the Catholic faith

Our lived experience impacts how we self-assess our skills, experience, and qualifications. In particular, data and statistics have shown that candidates who are BIPOC, LGBTQ+, women, people from working-class backgrounds, people with disabilities, and others with minoritized and marginalized identities may not apply to jobs when they do not believe they meet 100% of the requirements and expected responsibilities listed in the job descriptions. Some responsibilities and skills are teachable and can be learned on the job. If you can imagine yourself in this position, bringing value to our students and community and meeting most of what we are looking for, please apply.
