Job Description

Definition

The Substitute – Child Care Assistant and Early Childhood Lab Assistant assists in providing care for infant to preschool aged children. The Substitute supports in the implementation of instructional and developmentally age appropriate activities that support in the development of the whole child. The OCC Campus has two facilities, Children’s Center and EC Lab School, that Supports Student services and the Instructional Departments.

Definition: Under general supervisor, substitute employees perform a variety of work in support of a college or district program or office. Non-academic, non-classified substitute: vacancy employees are appointed temporarily when recruiting to fill a permanent position. Non-academic, non-classified substitute: no vacancy employees replace classified employees who are temporarily absent from duty. Non-academic, non-classified substitute employees are not part of classified service. Non-academic, non-classified substitute employees are at-will employees, have no entitlement rights to any position in the District. Substitute employment shall not result in the displacement of Classified personnel. Substitute non classified employees who are appointed temporarily while the District is recruiting for the permanent position may not exceed 130 working days within a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Substitute non classified employees who are temporarily replacing a classified employee may not exceed 160 working days within a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). *Retired CalPERS Annuitants: may not exceed 960 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30)*

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
  • Assists with planning and implementation of daily activities based on children’s needs and interest.
  • Assists in maintaining order by observing and focusing the activities and behaviors of the children in group activities.
  • Assumes responsibilities for groups of infants, toddlers, or preschool age children.
  • Maintains health and safety standards per OSHA regulations, Title 22, and Title 5 such as but not limited to hygiene, handwashing, nutrition.
  • Performs light housekeeping and child maintenance duties such as but not limited to cleaning, disinfecting, washing, sanitizing toys, surfaces, mats, cribs, bedding.
  • Develops positive relationships with parents and staff. Maintains a professional work environment. Maintains confidentiality of private information processed or received during the course of performing assigned duties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
  • Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience The position requires the equivalent of a high school diploma. Experience working with infants, toddlers, or preschool children or equivalent environment and successful completion of minimum childcare licensing standards. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

Knowledge and Skills The knowledge required will vary depending on the nature of the assignment.

Physical Abilities The physical abilities required will vary depending on the nature of the assignment.

Licenses and Certificates 12 semester post secondary units or equivalent quarter units in early childhood education or child development completed at an accredited or approved college or university, and at least six months of work experience in a licensed day care center or comparable group child care program, or at least 6 semester units as described above and agree to be enrolled in at least 2 units each semester until the 12 units requirements is met, or possession of a Children's Center permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Preparation and Licensing. Possession of, or eligibility for, a Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate. Possession of, or eligibility for a valid Pediatric First Aid Certificate issued by an approved agency (i.e. American Red Cross, American Heart Association, National Safety Council). May require a first-aid certificate. May require a valid driver license.

Additional Requirements Current Tuberculosis (TB) test. Physical examination. Fingerprint check through appropriate agencies such as the Department of Justice (DOJ). Show proof of immunization against influenza, pertussis, and measles. If a person meets all other requirements for employment but needs additional time to obtain and provide his or her immunization records, the person may be employed conditionally for a maximum of 30 days upon signing and submitting a written statement attesting that he or she has been immunized as required. A person is exempt from the requirements of immunization against influenza, pertussis, and measles only under any of the following circumstances: 1. The person submits a written statement from a licensed physician declaring that because of the persona's physical condition or medical circumstances, immunization s not safe. 2. The person submits a written statement from a licensed physician providing that the person has evidence of current immunity to the diseases described. 3. The person submits a written declaration that he or she has declined the influenza vaccination. This exemption applies only to the influenza vaccine.

Work Conditions Work is performed indoors and at time outdoors where some exposure exists to communicable diseases.

Substitute employment shall not result in the displacement of Classified personnel.

Employment is contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Short term/temporary assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked.

The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. Please note that early evening availability is desirable.
